Central works for me. I need an explanation of how we draft our 10 picks so we don' have discrepancies and I assume the computer will draft the remaining players.

Thanks,

Mike.

We'll use Wednesday night's pick 3 lottery results for draft order in the East and Central divisions. I'll give Fench til Wednesday around noon to pick either East or Central and if I don't hear from him, then I'll just assign spots for me and Fench. The rules for each division's draft are on the top of this thread. The Central will have a 10 round draft of only pitchers but they have first dibs on undrafted hitters once the autodraft starts. After you've read the rules at the top of the thread, please let me know if you have particular questions.

The West can start their 10 round draft any time Rigged Splits is ready.

I just created a separate thread for the West draft. In it, I posted the instructions for the West from the original post:

Remember, the West draft will be only for hitters that are rated "3" or above as fielders. The only exceptions are as follows: Bill Russell can be drafted as an outfielder in the East draft or as a SS in the West draft; and Yount, Templeton, Reggie Jackson, and Dave Parker are eligible in the West draft due to their high error ratings.

Questions for the commish: : What if Russell is drafted in both the East and West? Are Yount, Templeton, Reggie Jackson, and Dave Parker only available to teams in the West?

franky, it would be helpful to have the answers before we get too far along in the draft.

Thanks for organizing this theme league. It will be interesting to see how it turns out.

Bill Russell is the key to the entire draft. Once he is drafted, he cannot be drafted in the other division. Okay, I admit it. I have never liked the Dodgers, and, in particular, I always thought Tommy Lasorda was an idiot. Bill Russell was never a major league quality shortstop. Couldn't hit, couldn't field. I have no idea why Lasorda kept him for years as the everyday shortstop. And, frankly, I can't imagine why he would be drafted in the West. But, if you do draft him, he must play ss - he can't be put in the outfield by a West team. He can be put in the outfield by an East team if he is drafted first in the East.

Yount, Templeton, Reggie, and Dave Parker are eligible to be drafted in the West draft. If they are not selected in the West draft (or if they are cut), then they can be autodrafted or picked up by any team.

Can the west division draft a player that is a two at one position and a 3 at another. Playing him only at the position where he is a 3. Or do they only draft players with all 3s and 4s?

I've been assuming we draft guys who are never rated higher than 3 (aside from Russell, et al). Otherwise, everytime there's a lineup change (defensive sub, injury, etc.) HAL will switch around our starters in the field to get the highest rated fielders in their best spots.

In my current 60's league, I have Freddie Patek as my regular shortstop. I have a backup in Bobby Wine. I use Wine as a defensive replacement for Dick Allen at 3b since Wine is a 2 and Allen is a 4. Patek is injured for the remainder of the season so I have Wine as my starting ss. Hal twice in 1 series has replaced Allen with Wine as a defensive replacement and inserted Lee Maye (who doesn't play ss) as a defensive replacement at ss. This in essence weakens my defense since Maye is a 5 at the unfamiliar position. I am removing Wine as a defensive replacement for Allen to avoid this.

Yes, that is correct. For example, the West cannot draft Mike Schmidt even though he is rated a "4" at ss.

I made an exception for Bill Russell because, in real life, shortstop was his normal position. In the 70s, Russell played over 10,000 innings at short and only about 800 in the outfield.

I'll take the East, which puts Fench in the Central. I set up this league to show which strategy is the best and I think that fielding is undervalued in the 70s game. So, I think that the East division will do the best. We'll see.

Thanks Franky,

Now since we cannot have any players that are not 3s or 4s we shouldn't have to worry much about HAL's substitutions but if we take Russell I'm assuming he can't play OF for us?

Also, we can't take any 2s or 1s in the autodraft, Is the same true for after the season starts?
