Player of the 70's?

By the numbers, it probably would be George Foster. 161 homers, 494 rbi's, .280 avg. and .542 slug. But toss in Steve Garvey's defense with these numbers - 145 homers, 501 rbi's, .309 avg, .542 slug. For the non-power guys, Morgan (476 runs and 414 walks) and Carew (.334 avg, 853 hits) lead the way.

I checked a few guys to see what seasons they had. Foster did it with 4 different cards. Baker (77) and Morgan (72) had the same card three times.

I would say franky35 had the team of the 70's. Playing in the wild wild west must have worn him and the rest of us out for the playoffs. 12 of the 16 teams in the West had winning records.

Bad luck award has to go to yellow dog. First, he had to play in the West. Next, he had to do it 3 times with George Brett's 1974 card!!

My team made the playoffs 4 times and each time they lost in the first round. A couple times I had Vida Blue's MVP season which was key to 2 of the trips to the playoffs, but this time he had a poor match up against the Mariners and they beat Blue in Game 5 of the first round. Congratulations to canauscot's Mariners for winning a Game 5 and Game 7 to win the championship - he got his money's worth out of last season.

Yellow Dog's 3 seasons of Brett's rookie year is the worst luck I've seen in this game. I think Garvey deserved the MVP of the 70s - every year he was batting over .300 with excellent slg%. Moving on the 80s will be tough for me. I've only played the 80s twice and don't know the cards. If anyone has some pointers for me, let me know.

I really like this format since it groups players by the era when they competed together and it limits the player pool so we can afford to keep some higher priced players that are not playing their best year. So far, I've been using cars I have personally known for my team name, but other than a used Toyota camper-top (great times), I can't recall one 80's-produced vehicle that I or my family owned. So, after the initial 80s season, I'm stuck for names.

Johnny B had a tough 70's Tourney also. A 1974, two 1975 and a 1977. Only managed to slug .500 once playing in Fenway. Between the park and his card, he always got close to 100 RBI, but was only a force on the 1977 card and never saw one of the monster years.

Excellent point about YellowDog's bad trot with Brett. YellowDog did remarkably well considering. Well good riddance 1974...hello 1991?
Thanks Franky, being good gets you to the playoffs, being lucky gets you championships. As for cars, well you've got to start with the 'Back to the 80's' synonymous Delorean...then maybe Magnum PI's Ferrari 308 or Knight Rider's Firebird Trans Am. Not my cup of tea, but the most cherished Milton District High School parking lot treasure of the middle of the 80's was the IROC (probably still is)...for players, try Chuck Rainey!
Agreed, Foster was great, but Garvey was the man.
