Chicks dig it

PostWed Nov 06, 2013 3:34 pm

I'm in a $100M standard (non-theme) league that finishes up this week. Since all of us from time to time want to see "what would happen if" I thought there might be interest in checking out some of the stats amassed in this league.

First off, here's the league standings : Tinker to Evers to Chance

Exhibit A: Bare bones pitching staff in Fulton - Monster Mash

Exhibit B: Another bare bones staff, in Baker - Mudville Nine

Exhibit C: A speed team with expensive strikeout pitchers, in Royal - Chariots of Fire

Exhibit D: Another cheap pitching staff, but this one was successful, in Ebbets - Willie Mickey and the Duke

The numbers are, to say the least, eye-popping. Several new records have been set, and there's still 9 to play.

Thanks for sharing! I'm actually looking to join a 100M league, and found the various strategies interesting to say the least!

If you have any vacancies in future 100M leagues, I'd be interested.

Not so fair (every team in Wrigley, no SP above 1.99, all crappy RP), but by all means some Epic RBI numbers put up by the whole team...#7 included.

I just noticed a very curious thing looking at the league's leaderboard. It shows Mike Piazza (Mudville Nine) of all people leading the league in opponent SB pct allowed, at an unheard of 0.062 success rate. But upon closer examination, that's hardly correct. Piazza has allowed 262 stolen bases, thrown out 90, and has 21 passsed balls. His actual opp. success rate is 0.744. Why is it so wrong on the league leaderboard?

Foe whatever reason, the Leaders board won't display RBI or, apparently, stolen bases allowed over 256. Anytime Bonds, Ruth, Mantle, or whomever gets above 256 RBI, it won't show him. Piazza's 262 SB allowed is reduced to 6 (262-256). And 6 out of 96 becomes .062.

Thanks WN, you learn something new around here all the time.

I just posted a lengthy list of individual and team records for inclusion in the record books.

New records:

AB - 786 - Hornsby
R - 257 - Bonds
HR - 114 - Bonds
BB - 218 - Bonds
K - 232 - Sosa
SB - 200 - Coleman
SB Allowed - 263 - Piazza
WP - 35 - Larsen

Team 2B - 502
Team HR - 619

That season by Barry Bonds that combined power and OBP would probably eclipse records for OPS (1.461) RC/27 (21.3) and Total Average (1.988) if we were keeping track of such things.

My understanding is that for the record books, extreme theme leagues don't count. If you're getting ten "records" out of one league, that seems to exemplify the very concept of an extreme theme.

But that's the point. This wasn't a theme league. My team certainly wasn't, it's the same roster I usually employ in Forbes 65. But it certainly benefited from several teams going all-in on offense and spending very little on pitching and defense. You may get 1 or 2 in a given league that sell out for max offense, but we had at least three, plus one team that tried to steal as many bases as possible, two teams that hit a lot of triples, and another that broke the record for doubles. Just a quirk of fate that it happened that way, but that's the way it goes sometimes.
