I couldn't remember what the U.L. stands for in U.L. Washington's name so I went to find out. Here is some trivia on U.L.

The U and L do not stand for anything; his legal first name is indeed "U L".

Washington played mostly as a shortstop during his career, and is probably best known for the toothpick in the corner of his mouth while on the field and at the plate. He was also on first base and scored on George Brett's "pine tar" home run in 1983.

Much as many of you likely do, I like the Baseball Reference website.

U L Washington had 27 career homeruns. 4 of them came off Scott McGregor (who happens to be on my team). I always find it fascinating how often banjo hitters have a certain pitcher that they're able to tee off on.

I believe that we had a little bit of a discussion about Spike Owen in the previous draft. I just got to thinking that with a name like that, he would be well-suited to be a wide receiver in football (where he'd get to spike the ball every time he scored a touchdown). However, that probably gets you an excessive celebration penalty from the referees these days.

Some notes on Spike:

Spike Dee Owen (born April 19, 1961 in Cleburne, Texas) got his colorful first name by his mother, a Margie Spikes with an obvious sense of humor.
He was drafted by the Seattle Mariners in the first round (the sixth overall pick) of the 1982 amateur draft. In 1986, he was named team captain of the Mariners. In 1990, he set a National League record with 63 consecutive errorless games at shortstop.

In 2003, the Spike Owen Memorial Ballpark in Bay Village, Ohio and the site of several games of MLB Showdown, a card game created by Wizards of the Coast, was named after him by Michael Eller, a former Bay Village resident who is both a fan of Owen and an avid Showdown player.

I always thought the U.L stood for Uncle Leo.

I waited too long to get a good SS this draft. Pickings were pretty slim.

Yeah I didn't have a SS either till the last two rounds I got the Washington/Foli two headed monster for my SS. 2e37/3e19. The charts say that those two defensive ratings are virtually equal as to base runners allowed.
