Relief Pitcher Overuse/Dominance

PostFri Nov 15, 2013 1:12 am

My first couple of seasons are complete and the learning curve is kicking in. One of the many things I am learning is how to use relief pitchers. As mentioned in an earlier post, it appears you go cheap with starters and pay for a stud reliever.

In one of my leagues I just faced a $5 million reliever. In real life he pitched 117 innings. In the simulation he is on pace for 235 IP, 15 Wins and 37 Saves.

Hard to change my mindset after replaying so many seasons over the years with actual cards it's hard to see this type of stuff.

Pretty much normal for the game?

235 is pretty extreme, but the super reliever Is pretty much par for the game. What reliever was it by the way?

I've never played ATG, but a 3ip5@ is pretty rare for most of the non-ATG leagues. Although people still love the super relievers in the regular leagues, you may want to direct your question to the ATG forum and see how prevalent it is there....although Reagan's beastly card already gives some indication.

Not necessarily. Here is a ATG championship team using a high priced 4 man rotation with few relief innings.

Like the previous poster says this forum is for seasonal play-you should post this in the ATG forum. But lesson #1 -The online game is more about team building and strategic use of players and less about duplicating actual statistics.

I'm curious; what's the most IP anyone's ever gotten out of a super-reliever. Because somehow I've gotten 225 IP out of Casey Fien through 138 games. I didn't really expect it either. The bullpen roles remain somewhat of a mystery to me.

Well I would show my best RP year ever, but they never loaded the old 2005/2006 seasons.

That 2006 B League card, I had over 300 innings and 21 wins with him as a RP. But yea... sorry I can't show a link

Not really sure what you mean. This should be in the ATG barnstormers section? I guess I misunderstand what this specific forum is for.

Edit: Okay, I found it. Although this really wasn't a specific ATG question. It was a generic online game question. The specific players weren't the point.

I used Medlin as super reliever on a team. But site only shows team totals, not entire roster. Not sure why.

In ATG I have seen well over 300 innings and probably have been some 400 inning postings by those well versed in the strategy. Actually can be hard to avoid. Just listing a guy as setup will usually get him well over 100 and if he is good mid 100s. One thing to keep in mind when considering how realistic that is real teams have 7 or 8 relievers while we make do with 3-7. And real life teams will also throw some innings to additional relievers called up from minors as injuries require.

I stubbornly usually have good starters and good bullpens but probably good advice to emphasize one or the other.
