Marlins a year later

Last offseason we were all piling on the Marlins for trading away established players from a 93 loss team shedding payroll wherever possible. Now a year later. Many of those traded away had injury plagued years and did not help their new teams to playoffs and assuming same contribution to the Marlins probably would not have resulted in a productive overall season if kept on board. Meanwhile, at least based on this article, the prospects obtained are looking promising.

So with the perspective of hindsight what do people think of what the Marlins did?

What ends up actually happening using hindsight doesn't change the bad faith moves by Marlins management.

if I put on blindfold and crossed a 6 line highway without being hit by a car doesn't mind it was a good idea just because it luckily worked out.

In my opinion, the problem wasn't really the Marlins trading away what was supposed to be their next core, but rather the signings in the previous offseasons. Jose Reyes has always been an overrated player, Mark Buehrle was clearly going over the hill, Yunel Escobar's hitting had been trending the wrong way for awhile, etc. JJ was the player I thought they should have hung on to, and I think he will bounce back nicely if he can stay healthy for a couple of years.

Exactly... it wasn't about that.

It was about footing a 2 Billion dollar (after interest over the years) loan to the people who live there, promising to spend to be competitive, the blowing it all up right away.

Whether it worked or not wasn't the issue, it was the lies to get tax payer money, then balking on their promises.

I agree with all the above criticisms of the Marlins ownership and management, particularly of their bad faith near-extortion of their stadium from Miami and its citizens. That being said, I think they still got a good haul for the overpaid players they sent to Toronto. Although there's still a lot of unfilled potential with these players (particularly with Marisnick), I'd still take them over Reyes, Buehrle, Buck, (one year of) Johnson, and Bonifacio............particularly with their contracts.

There's good chance Stanton ends up with the Red Sox.

I agree. I think in the long run we may look back on those trades and say Marlins came out ahead.
Marlins after the stadium were like the kid who gets a large allowance for the first time. He runs out and spends to be spending. Then after a while realizes he did not spend wisely. Marlins spent on the wrong guys when they did spend and the influx of talent did not mesh together and result in winning. Ikind of agree with they needed to clean house and start over. I am reserving final judgement for another year. This year may be about giving those prospect who might be ready or at least close a full shot. Then next winter resume spending to fill whatever holes the bevy of prospects do not fill.

I don't see Stanton going anywhere. The seem pretty adamant about keeping him and he still has 3 or 4 years left before he becomes a free agent. They may eventually trade him but don't see it this year. Maybe if he gets too much in arbitration when eligible and the deadline for trading him before they lose him for nothing is close something might happen.
