The Jorge Orta experiment

Just concluded a season with Jorge Orta as my everyday 2b (and leadoff hitter). Team did quite well... 107 wins, which might be my best ever. Jorge scored 109 runs as my leadoff man, which I figure is about the same as you get with a slow OBP guy like Stanky or Bishop. Here's the team:

Check out the fielding stats for this team. Having a 4e22 at second base didn't really hurt that much. Here were the X-roll percentages for my infield:

1b Camilli (1e15) - 61%
2b Orta (4e22) - 59%
ss Bowa (2e19) - 75%
3b Baker (2e32) - 55%

Jorge made as many plays in the field as guys with 1 and 2 range

btw I use the .79 Bowa quite a bit in 80m, once in 100m (a bit over his head there though)

am wondering based on your staff being almost entirely left leaning what the opposition was-

Just had ORTA win two games for me, he was in the lineup as DH replacing an injured Dave Kingman...

You can use the schedule/results to view other teams. I checked and all the division opponents had righty leaning pitchers. They were totally outmanaged. This team lost in the finals to a lefty leaning staff. I always wind up in tough divisions with owners who know what they are doing.

There are other guys like Orta, some of whom played full seasons for championship quality teams in real life but are priced at or near the minimum. One is Jake Wood, who started at 2B on the 1961 Tigers (who were a great team but just a little short of the '61 Yankees). He's bulletproof, a great baserunner, and .5M. The .53M Dick Groat is bulletproof and a pretty good hitter who started every game on the World Champion '64 Cards. I use him a lot as a backup—but given his 3e41 at SS—I've never dared use him as my starting SS. Still, playing him would free up a lot of cash.

But in a 60M or 80M league he might be a true bargain. There are other guys like this, too, of course. How about a Chuck Hiller, who played on the 1962 pennant winning Giants. What about a Wood / Hiller platoon at 2B?

Or a .53M Groat / Billy Klaus reverse platoon at SS. Awful defense but pretty good offense for virtually no money.

Might be worth trying some time, but I'm not sure if I'll ever have the gumption to take a flyer.

Here is a full season of Chuck Hiller as part of a platoon with '83 Remy that I think worked out well. Defense was predictably a bit weak, but hitting stats were impressive for just over the minimum starter with 400+ ABs.

Only 21 errors between Hiller and Remy is GREAT, I've had that many errors out of one half of a L/R platoon a 2b. I would love to get that kind of production out of two guys priced that low!
