Injuries and fun factor

PostTue Nov 19, 2013 3:48 pm

Do injuries cause anyone lose interest in their team. In my sixties league I've totally abandoned my team after Frank Robinson went down for 15 games - again! I know injuries are an important aspect to the Strat-O-Matic board game but for the online game I wish they at least rarified the injury frequency.

I know there's an element of strategy when building a team with "brittle" players but when it's all said and done is it really all that fun?

Injuries are a big part of the strategy of putting together a team. It is very frustrtating however when the big 15 game injuries occur right before playoffs start. In the 80s, I stay away from Eric Davis and Kal Daniels. Certain players are a big injury risk and I try to plan for a good back up if I draft one of those players. No matter how hard you try to plan a team to limit the injury risk, you cannot avoid all injuries just like in real baseaball. It would be nice to be able to have additional money and mabye something like a five man practice squad that we could draft after the waiver draft is complete and prior to the start of the season. Trades from your entire roster plus the practice squad would be allowed. Would make for a different strategy and possible induce more trading.

In the mystery format injuries early in the season (especially short term injuries) can be a REAL BLESSING, allowing you to find out which card you have, or at least narrow it down.

15 game injuries to productive players is not a mystery card game issue. That happens to the 20XX players with less than 600 PA as well. I'm not sure I understand what the issue is. An injury of 4 games or more can be very telling in the mystery game. However if you already know the year you have and you like it and you get a later 15 game injury......that is not helpful at all. ;)

I like that players can get injured, it makes the game more realistic. If you don't want your key players to get injured then look to draft players with more than 600 ABs. Frank Robinson played hard and he got injured quite a bit, so he should get injured in Strat too.

Unbelievable. Someone who read this post must be messing with my team, lol.

After a 15 game stint Frank Robinson comes back and gets injured for another 7 games.

His box score line after being welcomed back to the lineup:
0 0 0 0

That's just bad luck. I am sorry to hear that. Losing is never fun.

I hate 15-game injuries. However, I would never suggest they shouldn't be part of the online game. (I also hate losing streaks and blown saves.)

I made the following in-game comments for a recently completed 90s team of mine:

September 4
"I can't remember the last 7-game injury I had or even the last 10-game injury. However, I think my team has had more 15-game injuries than we have had stolen bases.
I exaggerate only slightly."

September 10
"Two more series...two more 15-game injuries.
Nevertheless, our survivors hope to make a run for the playoffs!"

I confess the season still ended well as my team made it to the playoffs as the wild card despite the plethora of max-injuries.

I love injuries, especially in the Mystery game. I always carry 15-17 players on my roster, guys who play multiple pos. for OF and INF. Do I cut bait and run or do I stick it out? Someone drops an injured player because they are unwilling to ride out the Inj. if it is a good year and fits my needs I will pick him up. I love the flea market feel of the FA pool.

The biggest drag in the online format for me is the unwillingness to trade, or getting offers that make no sense at all.

Don't the big injury risk players cost less? If you get rid of long injuries then you'd have to adjust the salaries. I find taking the risk is usually worth it if you plan for the injuries with a good bench.
