Perhaps a rules change is in order.
I'd propose that the total wins over two seasons be used as the ranking measure, and include playoff wins as well as regular season wins in order to maximize the possibility that the guy(s) who won rings picked very late.
As our rule currently stands, it's entirely conceivable that someone wins a ring in season 1, then totally dumps his team for guys having bounce-back seasons and drafts in the top 5 with a totally stacked team for the upcoming season.
It's too late for the upcoming season since I already did the lottery calculations (was supposed to do them in September) but we can vote on it for future seasons. I think we voted on using cumulative win totals last offseason and it did not pass, will go back and look at it to make sure.
EDIT - Last year we voted on changing the alignment based on cumulative record, 14 voted for it but it needed 16 to pass.
