Roy Halladay is now a true ATG'er... but is he a HOF'er?

No doubt in my mind he will get in, the question for me is when.

Maddux and Glavine are on the ballot this year, and both are certain HOFs. Maddux to me is a lock the first time around, with 300+ 4 CYs, and as clean a slate as there is in the steroid era. I think he has a shot to get the highest % of votes in history.

Glavine will get in, but not a lock first time around. Never as dominant as Maddux, but 300+ will probably get him in 1st time. Another factor is that Cox and Maddux will be going, and I think there will be some sentiment for them all to go together.

Halladays case is compelling, but I think he is going in the 2nd or 3rd time around due to low wins. I think about 40/60 in first round. Personally, I would vote for him 1st time, but I think it will close.

Halladay will get in. Unlike Clemens his hat size never changed during his career.

I was surprised to learn Mark Prior officially retired yesterday. Hadn't pitched in the majors since 2006, but he still held out hope for a comeback. The list of promising rookie pitchers who flamed out too early is a very long one. Nolan Ryan was a freak of nature.

After some thought and watching a profile of career highlights on Baseball Tonight to remind me what he was in his prime I think I would lean toward saying he does deserve to get in. How long it takes depends. There are many deserving candidates this year and some may cancel out others if a lot of voters feel compelled to submit a limited card of names.

Every deserving person who misses this year will fall in to next year. So very hard to predict who will still be waiting around when Halladay becomes eligible. He is not a lock but should eventually get in.

Regarding Prior a lot of his comeback went under the radar. But just about every year he has tried to make various teams through the sign a minor league deal and hope to make it route. But every attempt has ended either with lackluster results or more injuries. This guy is about the unluckiest guy around. If he offers to go to Vegas with you run and hide because he has so much bad luck some of it is bound to rub off on you. It is a shame because before the injuries he was one of the best I have seen.

I think he is borderline - he had some pretty good years but not enough sustained excellence. MIke Mussina also pitched in this era of high scoring in small ballparks and had a much longer run (270 wins). I would put Mussina ahead of Halladay for HOF consideration. Halladay may eventually get in, but it may take some time.

200 wins, 2100 K's, 2 Cy's. I think that qualifies him for a quick induction into the Hall of the Very Good, where his plaque will hang next to Jack Morris's.

His major case is based on 2 things.

Career W-L%, where he is 17th. But 11 of the 16 guys ahead of him are not in the Hall, and one of the 5 who is in is Ruth, who wasn't elected for his pitching.

Career WAR, where he is 41st. But Bert Blyleven is 11th on that list and it took him forever to get in. Mike Mussina is 24th and he's not in yet.

I just don't think that's enough of a resume for the Hall.

Halliday was good enough to make the Hall as it is presently populated. I think he should be rewarded for walking away without suffering through 5 embarrassing seasons to build the resume. They should subtract votes for guys that have 200 wins at age 38 and pitch until they are 44 to get to the 250 win (HOF) plateau.

There's nothing wrong with having one or two bad years because it takes a while for a player to realize that there isn't anything left. But did any team really fear playing against Phil Niekro for the last 10 years of his career?
