Corky, that is one heckuva team at Coors! I was taking a closer look. I've often wondered what to do at Coors - I've only used it maybe twice so far myself. That looks like a great recipe! Your walks and home runs are awesome, and you're getting your share of hits too - within striking distance of your opposition for hits. And, you have really solid defense at 2b and SS, without spending too much at those positions, which also sounds like a solid strategy for Coors.

It's amazing to see what a huge run differential you have, despite being last in ERA. Very gutsy and effective strategy! :)

Joe,

I don't take anything personal here just love the different debates about things. Sometimes I read back my posts and I think I may have sounded too harsh but that's not my intention at all, glad you don't take it that way.

Gbrookes,

Thanks for the compliment! I wasn't sure how this would work to be honest. I knew the team would hit but wasn't sure the pitching would be good enough. The sims all had these pitchers as good bargains for Coors but that doesn't always translate. I am using a 6 man starting rotation for matchups which is also a first for me but it's been effective enough for me to consider again. To be fair I have gotten better seasons then expected from a couple of players which has definitely helped, and the other ballparks in the central was also a big plus for me.

#@$%!@#!

Another sweep? Two one runs, one two runs and a 10 inning game? Are you kidding me? Wow. This team must REALLY suck.

In our last 8 losses, only one by more than 2 runs and three in extras.

Oh, and we lost Gomez for 7 too. :(

We are NOT this bad. An amazing 4-11 in Extras

As a post-script to my previous post, the Goldeyes survived a 3 game road trip to Coors, against the Hammer Heads.

After the HammerHeads "annihilated" the Goldeyes 16-6 in game 1, going through the entire Goldeyes bullpen (never a good thing in game 1 of a series), the Goldeyes managed a split of the remaining 2 games, both one run games.

Griffin gave the bullpen a much needed break in game 2, going 7 innings, with Benoit picking up the "behind and late" 8th.

In game 3, Storey and Betancourt were brilliant in relief in a 10 inning game, pitching 4.2 scoreless relief innings. The Goldeyes battled back after a somewhat predictable shaky start by Weaver at Coors, and were tied at 5 after 9 innings.

Ruiz - perhaps tied with Votto for team MVP - hit a lead-off homerun to start the 10th inning. Betancourt finished the 10th to get the W and avert a 3 game sweep.

Ruiz has missed 14 games due to injury (probably slightly less than he might have, according to probabilities). But he's still 3rd in doubles, after Votto, in league stats. Ruiz is 2nd in batting average, at .351, and 3rd in OB, at .407. As I've acknowledged before, I took an injury risk for Ruiz and Votto, and so far I've been lucky, and they've both really helped an otherwise weak offense for the Goldeyes.

By the way, if anyone was ever wondering, the "Goldeye" is a relatively rare freshwater fish that enjoys the shallow but extensive Manitoba lakes. It's a delicacy in Manitoba. It's smoked and eaten cold with onions and cream cheese, as an appetizer - a summer treat.

There is a tradition of baseball teams in Winnipeg named "The Goldeyes". The current Goldeyes are part of independent baseball, playing in the American Association. They were the league champions in 2012. For many years, their manager was Hal Lanier, a MLB player from the early 70's, although he was fired about 7 years ago after a long run as manager. The Goldeyes are considered to be a very successful independent league franchise. I think they have led independent baseball in attendance in some years, averaging 6,000 or so per game.

The Goldeyes play in a beautiful ballpark called Shaw Park, in downtown Winnipeg. It was built by the owner of the team, and the current mayor, Sam Katz.

It's a great way to spend a summer afternoon, catching a daytime Goldeyes game at Shaw Park!

Just thought I'd share that with the group!

I remember seeing Lanier when Winnepeg came to play the Lincoln Saltdogs. I was a charter season ticketholder in 2001 but gave them up after 7 years. It's great to see some of the older guys still around the game. Our manager last year was Ken Oberkfell.

No, I'm out of it. But I'll settle for beating the heck out of your team the rest of the season!

My guys tossed that quote on their virtual bulletin board in the make believe clubhouse. Funny thing, it rallied the troops to make sure you're not going to pull off a "dead to first" run this season. ;)

:) Actually I heard Oberkfell interviewed on one of the pre-game shows last year! It was good to hear that! Brings back memories of baseball in the 70's!

WE WON A GAME, WE WON A GAME.

and then we lost two. :(

that's 13 of 14. Brutal.

GB, as for Ruiz only missing 14 games, let's put it this way Pierre has missed at least 15. You are very lucky with your injuries.

My struggles continue as well. Team batting is about where I expected it to be, but I continue to be disappointed in our pitching. The bad luck hasn't gotten any better, as current data shows 212 more rolls on hitters' cards when my staff is on the mound. Pretty tough to not give up runs in that scenario. :?

Yes, it's a HUGE challenge to overcome when HAL's dice tossing ain't loving your cards. In the days before online SOM, I used to put the bad dice in the freezer!
