It looks like the cut-off point for the top 36 (and the semi-final round) is now either 368 or 367, depending on the tie-breaker with Kire at 367. Jake Squid and blsmith7 would both have the tie-breaker vs. Kire, by virtue of having won an event championship, so there minimum score would have to be 367 to make the top 36. It looks like ROGGIE and teamnasty would also have the tiebreaker with Kire, by virtue of finals made. So, for the players with games still to play, with the tiebreaker on their side, they would need 367 points to finish in the top 36.

However, see the next post re GoDucks, and the races for the top 36 spots. If GoDucks should make the top 36, then the cut-off would be 369 points to make the top 36 (other than coachtwitty, who is in the clubhouse at 368, and would win most tie-breakers with 2 championships won).

Players who are currently ranked 37-41 should keep checking the standings periodically, for 2 reasons (1) some players in the 1-36 **projected spots** could possibly drop down below the 36 spots if they go on a long losing streak - some have lots of games left to play, and (2) if players fail to check in for the playoffs, or can't participate for some reason, then the replacements will be picked - in order - from the next highest finishers from those 37th and subsequent ranked players. This is a real possibility , as it tends to happen every year.

All players who are projected to be finishing 1-36 should look for the information on the playoff rounds (posted on other threads on this "Players Championship" discussion board, and should check in on the thread that will be set up for that purpose on or about December 15.

Another close race with top 36 implications -

Jake Squid and GoDucks are battling for the division lead in the Western Division in Event 5 League 8.

Although GoDucks is only at 357 projected points right now, if he makes the playoffs, he would need to either make the finals or win the league championship for league 8 in order to make the top 36, depending on how many wins over .500 he is down the stretch.

Jake Squid is currently projected at 369 points, and is in the top 36, assuming a 14-13 record down the stretch. If GoDucks should "go on a run" and achieve the top 36 as described above, Jake Squid could still finish in the top 36 at 369 points (the current projected total, by edging out coachtwitty (who has 368 points) for the 36th and final spot. coachtwitty would have the tiebreaker, with 2 championships won. If JakeSquid should win the western division, then that would eliminate GoDucks (a wild card is almost out of the question), and Jake Squid would need to finish with 367 points or more. Basically, Jake Squid needs to either (a) win the Western division, or (b) get 14 wins or more (or 12 wins or more if GoDucks doesn't succeed in his quest for the top 36).

It's a complete coincidence that they are in the same division. They are literally going head to head down the stretch.

Meanwhile, ROGGIE, teamnasty and blsmith7 all have 27 games to play still, and they are also in League 8, in the Central (ROGGIE and teamnasty) and the East (blsmith7). ROGGIE's projected points are 374, and teamnasty is projected at 372. blsmith7 is projected at 372 also.

ROGGIE and teamnasty will almost certainly make the playoffs in League 8, with a large lead for any wild card finish in that league. With the bonus points from the playoffs (5) they are extremely likely to get 369 points or more.

blsmith7 needs 11 wins or more in the next 27 games (11-16 or better) to get 369 points.

mpcharette appears to have clinched a spot in the top 36 already. Although his points show as 364 on the main web page standings, he has already won 5 more bonus points by winning the semifinal playoff round in league 7. Congrats to mpcharette on a stunning flash across the finish line for the top 36! He has advanced to the finals in league 7, and could win 5 more bonus points if he should win the championship in league 7.

gbrookes, thanks for the acknowledgement and running the tournament.

The best part about my semifinal victory last night was beating my college roommate, markyura, in 4 consecutive one run games. He actually outscored me 27 - 24 in a 5 game series. He now has a full off-season to think about how he can improve for the 2014 tournament.

Thanks again for running the tournament, I've really enjoyed it.

You're very welcome! It's the fun of the game, and competing with friends (and college roommates!) online that make it special!

Let me point at that, in addition to the excitement of the head to head battle for a top 36 spot, GoDucks and I face off for the final 3 games of the season.

It's been fun watching myself hang on at the very edge of qualification for the last few weeks. The competition has been fierce and fun and I can't thank gbrookes enough for the outstanding job he's done.

Congratulations to Roggie for clinching a playoff spot (with 12 games to go!) in Event 5 League 8, and simultaneously clinching a finish in the top 36 for the tournament!

Congrats to mpcharette for taking the championship in Event 5 League 7! He finished the tournament with 374 points with that great finish!

Teamnasty is on the verge of clinching a wildcard playoff spot in League 8 as well, which would almost certainly put him into the top 36. His magic number for the League 8 playoff race is 4 (teamnasty wins or GoDucks losses).

Blsmith7 is also on the verge of clinching a berth in the top 36, for the tournament playoffs. He needs 3 more wins in his last 12 games to hit 369 points for a tournament playoff spot.

Jake Squid and GoDucks continue to battle for the Western Division lead, a playoff berth, and a chance to clinch a tournament playoff spot (for Jake Squid) or a chance to keep chasing that 36th spot (for GoDucks). Jake Squid has a 2 win lead in the Western Division race with 12 games to play. But Jake Squid only needs 5 wins in his last 12 games to get 369 points, and thereby clinch a top 36 tournament finish.

GoDucks needs to win the division to stay alive in the League 8 playoffs, and keep his top 36 finish hopes alive. He would need to either make the finals in League 8, or win the championship in that league, to close in on the top 36. If he made the League 8 playoffs with a 7-5 finish (or better), he would need to make the finals in League 8 to get 369 points. If he should win the division with just a 6-6 record down the stretch (unlikely), then he would need to win the league championship to make the tournament playoffs.

Thank you for the updates!! It's been fun in league 8 watching to see how what we do is impacting everyone else both positively and negatively through your updates. It's been a crazy season also--very pitcher heavy league which tends to be a little opposite of the norm in most of the leagues I've been in. It's also comforting to know I should have clinched a final 36 already--whew. That normal crash and burn playoff run won't kill me this time :)

ROGGIE - my pleasure! :)

Update-games played through Tuesday December 10 -

teamnasty clinched a wild card playoff spot with a 3 game sweep, and a solitary loss by GoDucks. By doing so, he also guaranteed himself at least 371 points, and a top 36 finish in the overall tournament, with 9 games still to play in event 5 league 8.

blsmith7 picked up 1 more win, for 367 points in the tourny. He needs just 2 more wins to clinch a top 36 finish in the tournament, with 9 games to play in league 8.

Jake Squid won 2 of 3 last night, for 366 points. He needs 3 more wins to clinch a spot in the top 36 (also 9 games remaining).

GoDucks also won 2 of 3 last night. He kept pace with Jake Squid in the western division of league 8, but still trails Jake Squid by 2 wins for the division lead, with 9 games to play. Jake Squid has the Western division tie-breaker, so GoDucks is battling time now. Jake Squid's division-clinching magic number is down to 7, with 9 games to play, including a season-ending series against GoDucks! GoDucks needs to win the division to have a chance of finishing in the top 36 with playoff bonus points.

Coachtwitty is in the clubhouse with 368 points, and the tie-breakers in his favour. (That's why the challengers need 369 points). If GoDucks fails to catch Jake Squid, or win the semifinal playoff series, the coachtwitty will capture spot number 36!

Stay tuned!

After Wednesday night's games (6 games left to play in League 8):

blsmith7 got one win last night, and is at 368 points. One more win clinches a top 36 finish for him.

Jake Squid got 2 more wins last night. He's also at 368 points, and needs 1 more win to clinch a top 36 finish. His magic number for winning the League 8 West division is 3 (wins, or GoDucks losses), which would also clinch a top 36 finish.

GoDucks fell back to 3 GBL in the League 8 West last night, with 6 games to play. He needs to win the League 8 West division in order to have a chance at finishing in the top 36 (see magic number re Jake Squid, above). In order to finish in the top 36 he needs to get 4 more wins (or more) and win the West division, then win the semi-final series.

Jake Squid and GoDucks go head to head in the last 3 games of the season. GoDucks needs to avoid elimination tonight (Thursday) (see magic number above) in order to have a chance in the head to head finish to the regular season on Friday night.

It's amazing how tight the scores are. If everything were to break right for me (winning final 6 games + winning league championship), I think that would move me up to 4th place. If, on the other hand, everything breaks wrong for me (losing final 6 games, GoDucks wins at least 4 games), I don't make the cut. The difference between 1st & 36th is not as big as it seems.
