Super relievers

PostSat Dec 28, 2013 1:29 am

Something has got to be done about super relievers. Having said that, I use them my self. Why should you spend a lot of money on starting pitching when you can spend 10-12 million on starters and stock up on a super reliever and several cheap but capable relievers. And there you have it, all of your pitching for 20 million or less. I never spend more than that on pitching up to 100 mil cap. As I said I use them because they are available but a dog will continue to eat until he pukes if you keep feeding him. A kid will do the same with candy. Well I have puked. Dale Murray threw 902.1 innings in his 12 year career. Heck he can almost do that in two seasons now. As I said I am just as guilty. I just had a team with two relievers at more than 180 innings and one at 166. Save me from myself! In all seriousness though something should be done to reign in the relievers to make things a little more realistic.

It's one strategy among many ... sometimes it works great, sometimes not. Here are examples from several recent leagues (80 and 100 mil) -- the w/l records of teams that used Murray or Sutter:

82-80
95-67
74-88
79-83
93-69
78-84
93-69
81-81
90-72

Exactly!

I discussed this at length with Bernie during BP v.2 to give rps a 3rd consecutive appearance for two key reasons ...first and foremost to allow our bullpen decisions more of a chance to succeed (or fail) "as we set them to do"... As it was, at best, a completely rested bullpen by the third game of any given series might, and often would be at HAL's mercy simply because of moves made in the first two games of the series...e.g. your lefty specialist faces one batter in each of the first two games of a series so now by rule is "fatigued" meaning your hard leaning righty might face 7 lefties in a row while getting blown out and fatigued himself (for your next series) in a 22-7 loss in 3rd game of the series...

Also while certainly "not" realistic, it does go a long way towards minimizing the new and ridiculously damaging fatigue rules which play a big part in our pitchers having ERAs of 7.00+ while leveling the playing field of Absolutely no other player feeling ANY effects of fatigue....A fielder never gets tired, ever. A hitter is just as likely on his 800th ab of his season to hit a HR as his 1st, 100, 200, etc. and batters like Gates Brown and Milt May and a ton more exceed all realistic usage expectations without any negative effect of fatigue.

I might not be clear in my writings but my point is....The way most of us "choose" to play here in ATG really favors offense to the point we're playing an arcade game...My opinion was, while understanding this might create the super reliever it would be an ok trade off to get some scores to be 3-2 instead of 9-8...

I was here when the super reliever caused much unhappiness in the 200X games but I told Bernie it never created much complaint in early ATG, assuring him there was so many strategies to win with people here would either choose to use it or not...but I really didn't think they would complain like the 200x customers did...I seem to be wrong though.

It's not the end all. Or an unfair strategy that only the team that drafts Murray can employ...You win with it, you lose with it, and all in any league, everyone can have one all their own if they like....It's a level, albeit unrealistic playing strategy along with many other unrealistic strategies here in this game.

It gives an edge. It does not automatically mean success. In ATG I, certain players were underpriced. Having them did not automatically mean success either but prices were changed. There are other unrealistic things here. Superreliever is just the most unrealistic.

Ken Smith, he of 41 abs, routinely used in leagues of 100m and less. And a Lefty used mostly against lefties...pretty unrealistic.

And Phil Weintraub and his 74 abs usually finds his way to a bout 400 abs a season against righty pitching.

And of course Gates Brown and his 92 abs used to huge success even up at 200m caps might be the most unrealistic of all.

So for me, Murray working in his 115 appearance and his 275th inning going up against Gates Brown in his 500th ab of the season looking for his 70th hr of the year pretty much sums up where we are.

Not sure there are any easy fixes to this. The CD ROM game has a "Force Daily Injuries" option that randomly chooses up to one batter and one pitcher per game to sit out based on overusage. I see a couple of problems with this - it will give a bigger edge to veterans who are better able to manage their teams, and it since its random, it will lead to carping about why HAL sat out Dale Murray with 257 IP while my opponent was allowed to use Sutter with 193 IP.

Perhaps one thing that could happen for batters is to eliminate the cards of Gates Brown, Phil Weintraub, and their ilk. However, based on HAL's helplessness at pinch hitting prior to the 8th inning, using them now currently is more of a detriment than a positive.

Unrealistic for sure. There are ways to solve it but many don't see a problem with it unfortunately.

Nev who is this Bernie you speak of? Is he from before darkness covered the once fair land of ATG? Is he the Wizard that the "Old Ones" talk about in hushed tones?
