New Year's Eve Trivia

PostTue Dec 31, 2013 8:24 pm

I was reading a columnist the other day as he discussed his HOF ballot. He casually mentioned that he voted for a player because he was one of seven in baseball history to end his career with 10,000 AB's and at least a .300/.400/.500 slash line.

OK, name the 7.

Hint - the 10,000 AB requirement probably eliminates two dozen people.

I'll reel off names of guys who didn't walk relatively all that much. I'm thinking Ruth and Ted Williams don't qualify.
Aaron, Mays, Gehrig, Musial, Cobb. Yount and Frank Robinson not sure if they meet all the criteria

Scumby, you scored 2 of 7.

Frank M - you are up. I subscribed to the post, so hopefully I will be able to keep up better.

I had to look this up, it's plate appearances not at-bats. The obvious ones are Cobb, Musial, Ruth and Thomas. I guessed wrong on Bonds and Williams. One player was a real shocker to me...retired last year.

Tris Speaker would qualify. I thought Todd Helton but he came up a bit short on plate appearances.

I'll say Ty Cobb, Stan Musial, Tris Speaker, Mel Ott, Babe Ruth, Chipper Jones, and Frank Thomas

Eveldrive, you have all 7.

There may well be another dozen with 10,000 PA and the .300/.400/.500 slash line. After all, there are only 26 guys with 10,000 career ML AB's, and some of them (Aparicio, Vizquel, Maranville) are good-field, no-hit shortstops.

Personally, I was surprised that Honus wasn't one of them - he fell short in both OBP AND Slg (despite his 996 XBH). His failure to reach this level makes Spoke and Cobb all the more remarkable.
