Ok I'm confused. I thought there were only 7?

It is justifiably confusing. The original HOF article written by Bob Smizik of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Dec 27th says the following corncerning why he voted for the Big Hurt:

Frank Thomas: Only seven players in MLB history with more than 10,000 at bats have a slash line of .300/.400/.500 or better. Thomas is one of them -- .301/.419/.555

The problem here is, what he meant by "at bats" was actually "plate appearances". I was stumped after looking at the list of career AB leaders on baseballreference.com. Especially when the player he was talking about was FAR down the list at 120 with 8199 ABs. But when you look at the list of career leaders at PAs, that's when sluggers with a high number of walks jump up the ranks. There are 78 players with more than 10,000 plate appearances, six of whom join Thomas in the exclusive 300/400/500 club.

Which also means Mr. Smizik will most likely be voting for Chipper as soon as he is eligible.

The Mick fell about 100 PAs and .002 in average short.

I get that part of it. I still don't understand what rburgh meant with his latest post that there may be a dozen more with that slash line when I thought it had been established there were only 7.

really elevates my opinion of both jones and thomas. WOW!

especially jones since he played 3b and no DH

10,000 plate appearances is a nice, round number but just below that are some My-T-Fine hitters.

Ted Williams
Jimmy Foxx
Lou Gehrig
Rogers Hornsby

I think even a lousy extra season from any of those guys would keep them well above the .300/.400/.500 Mendoza line.

actually they all would have made it with the 162 game schedule as opposed to the 154. checked jones stats. in his 99 MVP year he was 25-3 in stolen bases.

With Ted Williams at least he served in the military or else would probably be on or near the top in many categories
