The Problem with Live Drafts

PostFri Feb 07, 2014 12:19 pm

SOM has the live draft system all wrong. Most drafts should be a 3-8 hour minimum between picks. This way, there is no deadline for registration. You just post the league, wait until the 12th owners fills, and then the draft starts automatically (or 24 hours later), giving each owner 3-12 hours to make each pick. The clock can be turned off the first round, making sure that everyone is aware of the ongoing draft. It is difficult to fill teams with the current draft system, because if the 12th owner does not join by 9 PM tonight, you have to re-set a new time, and then you end up losing owners who cannot draft a certain night, etc. Also, most people are too busy to draft for three hours. Spreading the draft out over a few days would solve lots of problems.

There is another prosperous baseball sim that has been doing using this draft system for over five years. They fill their drafts quickly. The draft is usually finished in 2-3 days. It cannot be that difficult.

This is such an easy fix. Extend the time and solve most of the drafting and registration issues.

That draft is already available. It's called Diamond dope. We want a draft in real time in one sitting, that is reliable and is backed by customer support to help us thru the occasional hiccups and worse situations.

I believe Dope draft is planned to be shutdown when the SOM live draft is running smoothly.

They suggested once all the hiccups are done, they will figure out how to allow people to create custom draft times. then we could put 3 hour time limits and use it as a DD replacement.

Then again, if you're going to take SOM at their word, you're going to have a bad time!

Thing number one:

There will ALWAYS be at least occasional issues with the live draft- just comes with the territory of doing it.
If I had a reputation or a ton of money to gamble, this would be a no-brain bet.

Think we can all agree that some mistakes are okay- its the how the mistakes are handled by you know who that many of us continue to have issues with. In the real world we call that being responsible; I don't know what you call it in the virtual world.

Thing number two:

Having a long draft option is certainly a nice thing, especially for certain leagues- but the engagement involved in being in the moment and making quick decisions is a lot of what folks play for who do those.
