Congrats to all the playoff teams, and to cabobob especially. Luck is a part of it, but certainly not all of it. You went with a sound strategy, especially for a newcomer, and it worked. I suspect you also matched your players to your stadiums very well.
My team was in playoff contention for the first 2/3 of the season, but faded down the stretch and finished 82-80, well out of the race (I had 100 and 91 win teams in my division). Not enough hitting, and the pitching couldn't carry the whole load. A few notes of interest:
-- I pulled off a couple of trades. I like to trade, but a lot of managers don't seem to want to. But if you can find some managers that are willing to explore things, and are not out to rip you off, you can save a salary cap hit and potentially improve your team. Midseason acquisitions Felipe Alou and Tony Conigliaro were both not on their best cards (Alou on his 2nd worst), but both played better for me than they had for their previous teams and helped pick up a stagnant offense that had too many singles hitters and not enough pop. For newcomers and skeptics: if you are open, honest and responsive in your trade communications with other managers, it can help you down the road, if not immediately.
-- Frank Howard: .313 AVG,57 HRs, 136 RBIs, good for 4th in the league in average, first in the other 2 categories. Oh, and I was playing in Crosley Field, not exactly a homer park.
-- Bob Gibson getting a 1.20 WHIP and 3.28 ERA, but only going 14-16. My real horses were Jim Maloney (18-11, 3.64, 1.36) and Larry Dierker (17-12, 3.27, 1.21). I agree with visick, Jim Maloney was a stud all season. I am a Maloney convert... as long as no one else finds out I like him...
-- Dennis Bennett and Bob L. Miller combining for 31 saves in 35 chances. Dennis Bennett????
-- I am like franky35: I make a lot of moves trying to find the right combination. It's possible that I could have overmanaged this team, since it was doing so well early and faded late (I honestly think the numbers caught up to my team, and that they were playing above their heads early). However, I do know that I have had a lot of teams which have gotten off to rotten starts, and through roster trial and error I have turned a season around, so I don't think I will change philosophy anytime soon. Besides, I am not patient enough to sit and wait.
