NEW SET : Card previews Catcher & SS & 2B ?

PostWed Feb 12, 2014 3:58 pm

I wrote to Stato to ask if we would have some nice card previews this year (like we use to have on Sporting News).
They kindly answered : ''This is something we will look into doing this year if possible. Thanks for the suggestion!"

So IF we get card previews, which players would you like to see first ?

Scooter Gennett should be an intriguing card. He showed hitting ability, sharp plate discipline, and surprising defense at second base in his substantial second half tryout.

He's a 3e15 and can't hit a lick againt LHP, but as the strong side of a platoon, he'll defintely get some play. That is if he's in the regular set and not unleashed. His card against RHP is so good he MIGHT be unleashed.

I thought he'd be an interesting card. Considering he had 213 AB's and played 69 games, I hope to see him in the regular set.

See, this is part of the problem having established an Unleashed set, now every year they have to find 10-15 guys to put in that set because they've set the precedent. That leads to guys like Lilly last year who IMHO should not have been in unleashed but in the regular set. With fewer candidates the odds of borderline cases seem to increase for inclusion in Unleashed, which is why I think Gennett is a candidate.

I still think the unleashed set is a good idea, as I think players who have played less than 40 games and had less than 80 ABs (maybe 100)--such as 2012 Reimold, Orr, Kozma, and Falu--shouldn't be among the dominant cards in the set. And there should be 10-15 players this year with such sparse playing time and skewed statistics, so I would think that Gennett (with his 213 ABs and 69 games played) would be included in this year's regular set.

As to Lilly with his 8 starts, I could see a theoretical argument being made for his (or any sp with 8 starts) inclusion, but Strat apparently (correct me if I'm wrong) has set the minimum at 10 starts for inclusion of a starter, and I think that's a solid floor for inclusion. It would allow for the inclusion of Sonny Gray and Jarred Cosart this year, both of whom dominated a solid chunk of the second half last year and should be exciting cards in this year's set.

Sorry your wrong, guys as low as 5 starts have been in the regular set, and that''s my big issue, there is no hard set defining line, and whatever criteria they use seems to shift on a year to year basis.

Just included them all and price them accordingly, if the cards are that good set the salaries that high.

If cards as low as 5 starts have been included--and I'd like to know who those starters were and how many innings and actual games pitched they had--then Strat made a mistake. However, that doesn't mean they should throw all attempts at criteria for inclusion to the wind and let all the players in...and make another mistake. The unleashed set is still a good idea since players such as 2012 Reimold, Kozma, and Falu (and probably Lilly) with such minimal playing time and minimal actual production shouldn't come in and become the leaders for the regular set, regardless of how they're priced.
