I completely agree with this, and I sincerely apologize that the rules were not more specific. As I said, I borrowed these rules from another keeper that I am a member, but not commissioner, of. That league, and all of the others I am in, only allows for the drafting of carded players (with the exception being via the prospect route, as you note Dave). So I guess I assumed (wrongly it would seem) that other keeper leagues also restricted draft eligibility to carded players. I therefore failed to appreciate the importance of flagging this up in the rules. I accept that this was a mistake on my part.

Having said this, my intention from the very first post looking for other managers was that this would be a carded players only keeper league, as this was the only way I knew. And I would not be interested personally in a league that allows for the drafting of un=carded players. But given the obvious lack of clarity in the rules, I suppose I could live with the annual Supplemental draft being a limited vehicle for the acquisition of un-carded players. I would NOT be interested in using the annual Spring FA drafts for this though. I'm not sure why we would restrict to carded players only for the Initial FA draft, but not subsequent Spring FA drafts. But again, the rules as written are not specific enough.

So we have a few choices here. We could:

1) accept my apology / explanation and agree to my original intention for the league, which was to draft / use only carded players

2) agree to restrict all future Spring FA drafts to carded players, but allow un-carded players to be selected in the annual 3 round Supplemental draft

3) allow for the drafting of un-carded in all subsequent FA and Supplemental drafts

Please post ASAP with your vote.

Option 1 is clearly my choice, but as I said I could live with Option 2. Option 3 is so far removed from my original intention that I would leave the league. But I think my draft is good so far, so you shouldn't have too much trouble finding a replacement!

Thanks and sorry again for the confusion.

It sounds to me by carded you mean players in on line game set.
If we go with them only then we will have to wait until the online player set hits the streets (usually late feb/early march)
or do as we will this year have another few rounds to deal with the unleashed and left out players.

Yes, I mean players given a card by SOM online. If you remember, we discussed this at the very outset. We were all keen to get started, so we agreed that managers would draft borderline players (Billy Hamilton, for example) at their own risk, and that we would hold a one time only Supp draft for managers that gambled and lost to get back to 40 players.

I would be fine with option 1, if spring draft doesnt occur until after we know who has card online, regular set. I went back over league rules in 3 other leagues that use regular set and they all had initial draft with players who had cards online, but any subsequent fa draft no stipulations. Also, no mention of needing card for supp draft. I am also fine with both options 2&3, but I will go with what the league wants to do. Just want some clarity moving forward.

I vote option 1 and really love the pre card concept with the added "draft at your own risk" aspect.I am in 12(this makes 13   ) keeper leagues and what I like is that they all arent played with the same rules.USKL1 has no prospect drafts but any player is allowed to be drafted as long as they have seen at least 1 AB or IP. USKL2 also has no prospect drafts but only som online carded players are allowed(leashed only. Some are leashed and others unleashed. Big this is your baby and I think we should go by what your vision was for the league regardless if some of the wording doesnt come off right.I think we should allow you to make the necessary tweaks before we head into season 2 and this way moving forward we dont have to keep having all these "debates" about what the rules "specifically" state. We are all in more than 1 keeper so there really shouldnt be any serious problems going forward once the bugs are all out.

Option 2 makes the most sense to me. That way everyone is eligible to be drafted in some form. (As Dave pointed out, it really doesn't make sense for uncarded/unleashed guys to not qualify as prospects or the 40 man roster.) and each team would be limited to 3 so it doesn't seem like that big of a deal. Honestly, option 1 is my least favorite of the three but I guess I'd accept it if everyone else agrees to change the rules 7/8 of the way through the initial draft. That being said, i do like this pre-card draft concept and I'd even propose that we make the free agent draft be before the cards come out every year (with the same stipulation that if you draft someone who ends up unleashed/uncarded, you have to replace him (then ideally that guy is eligible in the 3 round between seasons supplemental draft, but even if he's not (option 1 here,) I still like the idea of the pre-card aspect being a regular thing.)) Plus that would put us into position to start right when the cards come out ( and not have to have this draft at the same time as others.). Something else to consider while we're working out the details here.

The main reason why I like option 1 is in big part for the supplemental draft between seasons.

I would rather have only the carded players available because then it is a stated player pool that we all can pull from.

My fear with being able to picking anyone is that in the supp draft I'm picking 3rd and I take some average joe because I don't live in St. Louis and didn't notice oscar tavernas played in his first game, then making him draft eligible. So then a better team than me gets a guy with infinite more potential because the guy who drafted him gets Cardinals games and I don't.

Obviously that's just an example because Taveras should and will be drafted as a prospect, but I hope you get my point.

I would concur
I like the added "gamemanship" and risks involved in this option.
