Ratings Available

PostSat Feb 22, 2014 4:18 am

Hello All,

If you're looking for a way to improve your results by understanding the cards better and how to rate them, I just wanted to make you aware that I have been providing services that might help out.

In case you're curious, some of the guys who have purchased my 200n ratings in the past are: Madigan, stevep107, Kaviksdad, and akIndian.

Some ATG3 guys are: Petrosian, DocX, PBTR, greyhound, Semper Gumby, and springer.

The guys who have purchased JTJ ratings have been very appreciative and mostly successful (see the site for their comments) so I wanted to let others know that it's available if they are so inclined.

This certainly isn't the only way to get an understanding of the cards, but I just wanted to make people aware it's available in case they didn't know.

Even if you don't use our system, I believe it's important to have *some* type of rating system with which to compare players.

I'm offering:

- Files containing all the stat calculations for the players along with my Ratings for all eligible players. Among other things, the ratings take into account hitting, power, ob, fielding, stealing, running, wild pitches, balks and T-ratings.

- Value Ratings for Teams (including specific comments on strengths, weaknesses, and areas for improvement) and if requested, entire Leagues.

- Ratings are available for all 20nn, 1969, and ATG3.

Ok, now the bad news, I charge a modest fee for these services. (but see below) Here's why:

- It takes time to generate the files. The only way I can justify the time to myself (and my family) is to get compensated for the time.

- I don't think it's fair to the guys who put a lot of time into do the calcs to just give it away

- The JoeTheJet ratings system took years for Wineman and I to develop and fine tune. We've been playing SOM for a combined 60+ years and we think it's a dang good way to evaluate the players.

If no one is interested, no problem - my day job keeps me plenty busy

You should be able to get all the info you need at the web site below. Or, contact me at ( joethejet at iwon. com or joethejet4 at gmail .com )

I know some don't like that I do this and I'm sorry if this offends you, my only intent by this post is to let others know that there is a service available if they're interested. If not, fine by me, I can spend more time on my own teams!!!

Ok, if you want to get an idea of what you'd get, for a limited time, I'll send out the 2012 rating for free for the parks I've already done (see the website for the 2012 "canned" parks).

I used these last year and they were a HUGE help. Easy to decipher and very solid. I'm a 20-year player and didn't have the time to break down the cards - Joe made it very easy for me. Must have for doing battle in free agent frenzies.

I think if you are serious about wanting to win and you play a lot a ratings guide is a must.

I've played this game twelve years and have never seen or used a rating system. I don't think there's anything wrong with them per se, I just get so much enjoyment and satisfaction out of doing my own "scouting" and wouldn't want to lose that by using someone else's rating system to do some or all of the work for me.

Tony, thanks for the kind words.

Strether, as I said in my post, I think you have to have some sort of system for evaluating players. Some people, like yourself, love spending the time pouring over the cards, probably counting dice chances in your head, and then jotting down notes. At least I'm guessing you do something like that. I think that's great and a lot of fun, I did that when I was a kid and had a ton of time. I don't have that any longer. So, a system, some sort of methodology for evaluating the cards and comparing to the salaries, I think, is important.

That said, there are many ways of doing this. Some do it by "scouting" as you say, some just get the data disk or book, some run sims, and some have ratings systems of one sort or another.

I'm curious, how do you evaluate the cards?

Of course you have to have some sort of system; as I explained in the second sentence of my post, I have never used an outside ratings system/guide that someone else has produced. As I said in my post, using someone else's ratings system/guide would take away from my enjoyment in doing my own "scouting" with my own rating system and my satisfaction in winning by using only that scouting and system.

As to my own system, it's a formula/strategy I've been developing for 12 years, which I keep secret from all but my closest compatriots... ;)

Ah, thanks for the clarification. Yeah, these ratings aren't for guys like you. They're for guys who flat don't have the time or the inclination to put together a ratings system.

Basically I offer this to, hopefully, help guys who would otherwise drop out because it's difficult to get your head around all the data.

I think for those guys, the ratings can help them have more success.

Hey, if players can't actually do the work and actually evaluate the cards for themselves (or have a difficult time doing so), then I'm sure your ratings guide can help them. I just think that in doing so, they're missing out on an integral challenge of the game, as well as the satisfaction of winning championships on their own.

Anyway, good luck on your enterprise, and i hope to see you and your ratings system at work in a league sometime.

Yeah, that would be fun. Of course, as I'm sure you know, the ratings are only part of putting a team together. It helps you evaluate players, but you still have to get all the parts necessary for a winning team (and then have a little luck too! ;) )

Say, I'm offering to give away a limited number of the 2012 ratings. If you'd like one, just for kicks and grins, send me an email and I'll send you (and anyone else) last year's ratings for the average park.

Yes, evaluating players is only a part of the game, but it is a major part of the game. It is what you use to decide which players to pursue, which players not to pursue, where in a draft you want to draft players, and how much a player fits into your various strategies (e.g. park type and team type). So when you use someone else's ratings guide to do a significant part of evaluating your players, you are using someone else's ratings guide to significantly assist you in playing the game itself. So, players who win using rating guides are doing so by getting significant outside help in a significant portion of their game play. In doing so, they lose that great satisfaction in knowing that they won--division titles, playoff games, or championships--on their own without the significant help of an outside ratings guide.

Thanks for your generous offer, but I have to pass. As someone who gets great enjoyment myself in evaluating players on my own and winning on my own, I wouldn't want to begin the slippery slope of even examining your ratings system.. ;)
