Would this change make ATG 8 the best yet?

PostSun Mar 02, 2014 2:37 pm

Instead of creating a few new cards that nobody really cares about and being left with still using the other 99% all of the time how about creating something that may generate renewed interest?

Lets wipe out those random great years from relative unknowns and multiple card players. I would be very interested if SOM did a lifetime version card set using career totals averaged out to a 162 game season. 1 card for every player (or 2 if the player happened to pitch and be a position player like Ruth), averaged out to what they really were as a player. The truly great players would be at the top salary wise, no confusion with multiple cards, no dropping and picking up different versions of the same player etc.

This would at the very least create a new interest being that there are only so many more cards they can actually add to the existing version. ATG 8 would be entirely different, not just an extension of all the previous versions. In addition it would curb some of the ridiculous season totals we see as career averages would be well below the "monster" years players put up. Ruth would still be Ruth but instead of 100 HR seasons we'd see more 70's and 80's in the right park.

I realize there may be other sims out there that do this already (I'm guessing, don't know for sure) but I don't care about those, I'm talking here in strat land. Are there any other opinions out there on this? Has it been brought up before? I'd like to get some feedback on this if its something others would be interested in?

There is a card set with hall of famers that have lifetime stats you can play with-
not all that interested personally.

Have you read about plans for an 'ATG 8'? Haven't seen a thing-
but imo there are a lot of stuff that would be wonderful for a new thing like BP3.

Nope...haven't seen any plans mentioned yet but I figured they would get around to it eventually. I have seen others inquire about it and I've seen polls posted for cards they want added and I always ask myself why? Will adding a few new cards to a tremendous size set make that much of a difference?

I think the career set would be something fresh and different and it wouldn't have any of the same cards as ATG 7. We would really be starting from scratch for the first time in years.

For me personally, this would be a non-starter. Nobody ever had "an average career year". Some years were wonderful, some pretty marginal, some were outliers. Inclusion of those years we might debate.

I would take issue with your remark that cards that might be created at some point are ones that "no one really cares about". There is a use for any of the cards that are here, you just have to work harder to find that use sometimes. Create fun themes, play 60 mil (where 100 hr seasons are often team totals), play shuffle leagues (even live draft shuffle leagues), set up leagues with constraining parameters (only players under 4 mil was quite a good one). You get the drift.

Anyway, sorry but I really can't second your idea.

Not sure I quite understand your first paragraph...What's wrong with a card that encompasses what a player has done over the course of his career? I can guarantee you that there wouldn't be a "Cesar Cedeno" on the first page of players sorted by salary. Who would be there a truly the best players to have played the game. I'm not against the individual season cards, but I am interested in an alternative at this point that doesn't include players who really aren't ATG players.

Secondly I don't mean to offend anyone that has an interest in certain cards being added nor do I fault you for all your hard work in creating polls to add players. Sure there are some that should be added and used, but as a whole I just don't think all that effort is worth what it puts back into the game at this point. We are near the saturation point.

BTW, I have played in and even created some of the leagues you mentioned. My favorite was the no offensive player over $5 mil, no reliever over $3 mil, $100 Mil cap in which the league leader in team OPS was only .675....so I've been there.

I think the effort is in getting them to actually do it-
not as much a question of which ones only because a certain person has taken a lot of time and energy to ask about which ones are most desired by people- so to me that's the least of the issue.

In the past when new sets were released, it was a major shift in either cards or tools or both.
ie, adding the entire NeL set was a huge thing.

But guys who have been here since the beginning can probably go into more detail about that.

I would like an ATG8 Mystery game or Hall of Fame game. This would get rid of the card freaks and give true value to the superstars. Also, the RP's need to be fixed so that they are not pitching 300+ innings.

How would you define "average"? Like baseball-reference.com's 162-game average? How then to determine injury possibilities? Rarely does anyone ever hit or pitch to their "average". In essence, what you would create is "another year", but a year that never existed.

ATG as you probably know started off as "All Time Great" teams that resemble all teams (a combination of stars and scrubs), giving us players that you would like to see assigned to the dustbin of baseball history or at least of ATG. ATG has come to include individual players rather than team rosters, perhaps a mistake because the same scrubs appear again and again on people's teams. I would argue for more new scrubs, mixed in with some different seasons for stars.

Why shouldn't Cesar Cedeno be on the first page? His 72 year was a thing of beauty as was 73. Shouldn't that be rewarded rather than a hypothetical year? To take Cedeno's case, a 162-game average would mean that he would relatively injury-free, which was far from the case in his career: he had a the fragility of a thoroughbred and the beauty of one, too. That should be there, I would argue by bringing in the 1973 card with almost the same slashline but with the spectre of injury.

I probably won't convince you, but as I said in all respect count me out.

"Platoon Priority" would make ATG8 the best ever, for me.

A pair of boxes where we can pick J Alou and Covington (for example, at a low cap) and check Covington as the priority. Alou never sees a RH pitcher unless Covington is on the DL. You end up taking your chances that Covington will face lefties, but this at least gets half of a rational pinch hitting done in a platoon, and shouldn't be impossible to code.

Maybe 6 platoon pairs, but I'd settle for 4. I'd even be happy with 2.
