HAL weird defensive substitution

PostThu Mar 06, 2014 11:02 am

I've missed obvious things before, so please let me know what I'm missing here:

HAL decides in back to back games to use Heinie Zimmerman as a defensive substitution for Tony Fernandez. Yes, a 4e44 for a 1e33. Tony is a 0, so he can't get hurt. Neither case involves a pinch hitter as they both happen while I'm in the field. There is no setting checked for defensive substitution (I actually double checked this since I couldn't figure out why he would do it otherwise).

Game 112:

8th inning, two outs, HAL brings in Zimmerman to play short.

Game 113:

He does it again in the 9th inning.

Help?

This is a quirk of a no DH league. You were behind or tied so HAL is doing a double switch when a new pitcher comes in. Fernandez made the last out and was taken out so the pitcher would bat "last". The computer program calls it a defensive substitution, but in fact it is for offense and pitching. The ironic thing is Zimmerman was the offensive hero in the last game.

So HAL pulls off a brilliant move by putting in Zimmy, who then doubles and triples, and HAL is the one who is weird??? :D

Yeah, I figured it was some sort of double switch thing. I'm an AL guy, so I don't speak double switch. Strange rule that you can move players around in the lineup like that, and Fernandez didn't make the last out in the second instance, it was the catcher who had been pinch hit for.

I guess I gotta ignore it or read up on the double switch.

Oh, and by the way, the boards are working cleanly as ever. I'm subscribed to this topic but have yet to receive a single notification by email that someone has replied.
