Using Choo against LHP

PostFri Mar 07, 2014 12:18 pm

I'm debating whether to opt for a platoon with Choo in LF (since there are some solid options for cheap) or use Choo all the way. It looks like his OBP and * with good lead % (though not great stealing numbers) would be a decent option at the top of a standard $80mil league. There's a real lack of TB and anything other than walks, but at least there aren't gbAs.

Am I deluding myself that he will be usable at the top of the LHP lineups?

Just like Chris Davis and Big Papi, I would use him full time. He costs too much in a 80M league for a platoon.

Justin, I think you nailed it. With good OB and no DP he's usable versus lefties in a $80M league. You could find a platoon partner but probably better off spending that money elsewhere.

I'm using him at leadoff full time. Killing RHP and he gets on base against LHP (.405 oba so far). Can't ask for better than that.

OK, so that definitely shows he can be solid in the role against LHP. Thanks guys. It does allow some money to be shifted elsewhere. Now, I just need to figure out where is the best tweak/upgrade to make.

Thanks.

I would not lead Choo off against left handed pitching.

Why not unless you were in a high payroll league?

Well, I guess he is getting on base 40% of the time for you vs. LHP and that is more than sufficient. It will be interesting to see if he can keep that up for the entire year.

I think it depends on who else you have and how many backward LHSP you're facing.

I'm actually using Choo as the #2 against LHP with Andres Torres as my leadoff. The lack of gbAs with the * led me to that (and it's the best place to hide his clutch). We'll see how it goes. Through two series he had faced one PA against a lefty reliever and that was it. That'll eventually change.
