Here's what I've done to become better at the game, at 200 mil anyway.

I just jumped in one day and put a team together, did well made the playoffs but lost in rd 1.

So I went back and paid close attention to who I was competing against, back when we had manager ratings that is, and picked out two or three guys to analyze to some degree. nev stuck out the most to me not b/c of this rating so much but b/c at the time I noticed he had a lot of teams built toward one side of the plate. So I figured it must work to some degree so I decided that would be my goal, to get good at building teams for the X side of the plate.

Now as morpheus has mentioned you can put yourself in a corner if you do the same thing every time, but my intention has been to learn the cards through this method and try to observe any improvements I'm making. Also I've gone both routes of building that style team with few platoons and with at least half the line up platooned. I'll worry about being burnt by doing the same thing over and over when that time comes I guess.

It seems to have worked for me as I've really come to know a good portion of hitters cards this way and know what kind of floors I can expect from certain cards, and have also learned that a good player heavily balanced to one side can really hurt you if he gets faced with that opposing side too much, so it has also made me much more aware of my day to day line up and rotations. Originally I was very much a set it and forget it manager, not anymore, IMO it can really kill you, and it is less fun.

But wouldn't you know after a few starts on each team and once I cut him (he sucked of course) he was picked up in two of the 4 leagues AND picked up in waivers in subsequent leagues

I love it.

OK occasionally somebody asks me in private for a draft list, and I often forget or don't have a good example of a good one that achieved my goal and for my specific park.

This is my most recent one, that turned out to be successful in terms of getting a lot of who I drafted AND being a quality roster, at least IMO.

I listed my consolation prizes for the spots I missed out.

1.Hornsby, Rogers (1922) (2B) - 12.39M
2.Foxx, Jimmie (1932) (1B,3B) - 13.16M - Helton 10.13m
3.Aaron, Hank (1959) (RF,3B,CF) - 11.51M
4.Mathewson, Christy (1909) (P) - 10.55M
5.Rodriguez, Alex (2005) (3B,SS) - 10.33M

10.Jeter, Derek (1999) (SS) - 10.61M

12.Smith, Lee (1983) (P) - 5.28M
13.Bench, Johnny (1970) (C,1B,3B,LF,CF) - 7.59M - Jorge Posada 7.24m
14.Delahanty, Ed (1894) (LF,1B,3B,SS,2B,RF) - 8.21M - Tim Raines 7.29m
15.Pfiester, Jack (1906) (P) - 9.69M - Dwight Gooden 9.37m
16.Belle, Albert (1995) (LF) - 6.80M
17.Miller, Stu (1966) (P) - 4.34M
18.Hershiser, Orel (1985) (P) - 8.75M - Mort Cooper 8.49mil
19.Feller, Bob (1940) (P) - 8.76M
20.Duffy, Hugh (1894) (CF,LF,SS) - 11.75M - Andy Van Slyke 7.58m

Ignore motherscratcher when he replies claiming this is a humble brag, I'm actually doing this for his benefit.

Thanks for sharing your draft lists Morpheus, it does help me compile future lists. I'm impressed with your openness! And your degree that you are willing to help other owners is very refreshing.

With those three draft lists you posted, which players did you net?

I make out draft lists similar to yours and then grade them with a red pen (like a teacher) for future reference. That way I can determine where certain players may be for future drafts, although every draft is different and there are no guarantees.

Something to consider, go back and look at the statistical leader boards of the cap you wish to play at. Esp 200mil, you'll notice a very distinct pattern and should see quite a few names consistently atop specific categories. Helps with knowing who to draft and who not, and where to rank them.

I.

So when you build from one side of the plate, are you talking just the hitters or do you slant all your pitchers a certain way? I realize most of the best pitchers in ATG are pretty balanced, but I'm still wondering?

I like it. That's a strong team. Good draft card IMO. Some reaches there, but without any req he's you'll end up with a pretty average team. If you didn't reach you wouldn't have Arky playing SS. Well done, dude.
