Jimmy Rollins a Hall of Famer?

PostTue Apr 01, 2014 1:25 pm

With his 200th HR on Opening Day, Rollins became the 19th player to have 200 Homers, 100 triples and 400 doubles. Apparently he is also only the third player to have those stats plus 400 stolen bases, with Paul Molitor and Johnny Damon.

Why not. Everything else in our society has been cheapened and trivialized up to and including our form of government. The Hall of Fame is no different. It has long been the Hall of the Fair to Pretty Good with the occasional Hall of Famer making it in the door. Jimmy Rollins is making 11 million dollars this year. That's 1.4 mil in 1960 dollars. In 1960 Willie Mays was making 150,000 dollars. That's 1.2 mil in 2014 dollars. Are you going to tell me that Jimmy Rollins is better than Willie Mays or even remotely as good. No way! And yes, I know they played different positions. I'm just talking about their value as ballplayers in general. In 1960 Mays had an off year (first year in Candlestick) but came right back and blew everyone's doors off in 1961-65. Go to Baseball Reference and look up some great old ballplayers and use the salary converter tool to convert their salaries into 2014 dollars and you will see how grossly overpaid today's players really are. Or maybe past players were under paid also. Just look at Mays and Mantle and convert their 1960 salaries into 2014 dollars and compare them to even mediocre players today and you may see the light.

I think most of today's players are overpaid in baseball, football and basketball. The salary cap system in the NBA does result in some players being underpaid for the value they provide to their team.

The problem is not so much in what the bona fide stars in baseball are being paid, but in what the average mediocre player is getting paid. Arbitration is terrible for the game with respect to most players.

No way Rollins is a HOFer in my mind. Only 3 position players who played at any time after 1950 have lower WAR than Rollins and are in the HOF. They are Roy Campanella (only 10 years and was a catcher and thus undervalued by WAR), Bill Mazeroski (who is in the HOF for one HR), and George Kell. Rollins belongs in the hall of very good.

Maz totally illegitimatized the HOF for me. maris had back to back MVP's, set the new HR record that stood the test of time until steroids and he's not even in the HOF. what a crock! now, i don't think maris was a HOFer like so many others. its been sadly cheapened.

Maz was probably the best defensive player of all time, at any position. I'm not saying he belongs, but asking should not such a defensive resume be in the hall?

no and i don't think he was the best of all time. you ever see him? he's 3rd among 2b for GG even though that's a crock too. ....................299 lifetime obp! that's pathetic.

I saw him. He was considered the best defensive player of the sixties at the time, and his skill at turning the DP is unequaled still. He led the league in 35 total defensive categories (assists 9 times, range factor 10 times, double plays 8 times, putouts 5 times and fielding avg 3 times).
He was not a good hitter, so probably not a HOFer. But his defensive rep was well earned. Strat should have a 2b-0 just for him

JImmy Rollins, though a good player, is not a HOFer. To me, the HOF should be the best of the best at his position for his generation. In this generation of players, only Jeter as SS gets the nod. There are some players that are in the Hall that should not be in, mostly due to having their buddies being on different Veteran Committees. Maz is worthy. Defensively, he was brilliant, like Ozzie Smith who is also in the Hall. There is something to be said for defensive geniuses-Maz wasn't a total zero at the plate and you have to consider he played in an era of depressed offensive numbers when SS and 2B was a non-offensive position for the most part. How many runs did he save over the course of his career? His defensive WAR must be off the charts which made him an extremely valuable commodity in that era.
