Jimmy Rollins a Hall of Famer?

The hall of fame, if just talking about the players, are by me and many others put into 3 types: the greats, the good over a long period of time, and the greats at a particular aspect of the game.


Ruth, Cobb etc are in the 1st.
Yount would be an example of the 2nd
O. Smith a good example of the third

Voters dont really care how much a player contributes to a teams wins but rather if they were awesome at at least one thing in the game or good at many aspects of things and do it for a long time.

O. Smith made it because he was hands down an elite defensive short stop who compares with the elite of all time.

If you look at younts years there were always others who were better but he lasted long enough to accumulate all those milestones that great players reach. Just because it took him longer than so many other hall of famers doesnt really matter to the voters.

If i lasted 20 years in baseball and beat henersons stolen base records but hit 250 i would still probably make the hall.

If i stike out 8000 batters but had an era of 4 and a 500 record i would make the hall.

Be the best at at least one thing or hang around for 20 years to hit those milestones u will make the hall. Or just be great at everything for a decade and make the hall on first ballot.

Maz totally illegitimatized the HOF for me. maris had back to back MVP's, set the new HR record that stood the test of time until steroids and he's not even in the HOF. what a crock! now, i don't think maris was a HOFer like so many others. its been sadly cheapened.

Maris was clutch in the 1967 Series for the Cards. He was a guy in poor health most of his life, retired at age 34 and died at 51. He is kept out because he broke Ruth's record. That's it.

Not to pick on Maris but he hit 275 HRs with a .260 average. One time 40+ HRs, three times 30+ in a 12 year career. He was clutch in the '67 series (hit .385 with .972 OPS) but in 41 total post season games he hit .217 with an OPS of .667. Similar batters include Bobby Allison and Jay Buhner. If you want to say he belongs in the Hall because he hit 61 HRs that is hard to argue. If you say he belongs in the Hall because he was a great player I just don't think that is true.

As for Rollins he is a very good player. Very good players don't belong in the Hall.

But none of those triples were hit during a full moon so .....

If you pick just the right set of 3 stats a ton of players might be one of only 19 to do reach those levels.

This to me is more of a trivia queston than a HOF qualifying accomplishment.

I'm not a Bill James/WAR fan so Maris being statistically comparable to Allison or Buhner doesn't influence me. I'm saying he belongs in because he was a two-time MVP, holds the non-juiced HR record, and later was in 2 WS with the Cards. He was a great player slowed down by injury. However, I'm comparing him to guys like Andre Dawson who got it.

I think Maris is right on the borderline, but having said that, if someone gave me a vote I'd vote for him
