I recently played in the Chicago tournament and learned more about this game in 1/2 day than the 12+ years playing SOM online. Frankly, I got schooled.

If you're interested in testing our your SOM strategy against the area's best players, then try the F2F version.

Is this CDROM or board game? Because while I loved my board game for many years, I have exactly zero desire to be looking up charts again. I miss rolling the dice, but there are way too many charts and other little things that require another roll that I wouldn't begin to know since I've been playing CDrom since 1993

I have played in some sanctioned Strat F2F tournaments in the Philly area. Lots of fun but a long weekend of playing strat from 8am to 1am . As always the draft is the best part. There are no more tournaments in the Philly area anymore that I have seen but if you know of any let me know. Cant travel due to limited vacation time but would love to play locally.

Eddie, there are actually tournaments in Philly and Harrisburg this year. Check out somtour.net or shoot me an email and I'll get you some information.

Steve, these tournaments are played with the boardgame (card and dice) version. There are several people that play a lot that would be more than happy to read the charts and walk you through the required rolls. By the end of your first series you'd have it down again just like riding a bike.

I live in Ohio about 1 1/2 hr away and was thinking about going. However, I play on line SOM and basic or modified basic board game and wondered how much I would be over my head. I have never been to one of those events and thought it might be interesting. I don't mind getting my butt kicked but don't want to be laughed out for lack of knowledge.

My experience with the tournaments is that they would be happy to have you. The more the merrier. I play in a face to face league in Delaware and we use some different rules than are used at the tournaments so everyone was willing to help me understand the differences so that it all made sense to me. You shouldn't worry about being new to it. Everyone is new the first time so you should go. You wont regret it.

I understand that their are still people that live by cards and dice and will only play that way, but I am with Steve F. I prefer the convenience, speed and precision of the CD-ROM and on-line play to cards and dice. I am not saying I wouldn't ever join a face to face, cards and dice tourney, like the old STAR Tournaments advertized on SOM's web site (At least they used to be). I bought a board game (probably like my 4th) about eight years ago and it came with the STAR Tournament dates and cities. I was intrigued and wanted to play, but then I found on-line SOM which satisfies what I am looking for best.

If this tournament (is it the STAR tour) or any other comes to Cleveland I would consider participating. I am sure it is a great experience.
