Lets start with all that I might be doing wrong here....after saying I had no interest in continuing this debate here I am again....So I'm possibly a liar or some other thing....

Funny but if this debate continues it will be locked and erased and strether will have his example of non-profane non-abusive censorship.

Also I'll try and accurately quote what strether wrote (hopefully before he edits things again)

So here goes....I gave this example of censorship..."Once again Bernie imo has failed to do his job. If I owned this company my first act would be to get his incompetent butt outta here"

and strether said.... I could see very well how that statement could be seen as abusive, while definitely being unproductive. if any poster made that statement to or about another poster, the "aggrieved" could legitimately report the offender for abuse, and the offender would be legitimately be censored. I don't see why an employee of SOM has to take similar abuse.

He went on to say.....Finally, this has been (so far) a civil discussion/debate. Nobody has--as of yet--said anything meriting anger or hostility.

So my question to any who care to answer it is....is it abusive calling someone an idiot as strether did in his very first post on this topic One idiot, (whom I will not name) ...or is it somehow less abusive since he didn't name names? Is it not abusive at all?

Is it abusive, calling some of our community "whiny malcontents"
I've seen many more whiny malcontents who incessantly carp about SOM while continuing to play it.

Is it abusive to anyone who voices concern of what in their opinion is too high a cost for the product to be called "irrational complainers" These irrational complainers are still around in droves.

Does anyone else find it amusing that this is a guy suggesting ways to galvanize the community...just askin.

When Nev did not immediately give you examples it was probably because you implied he didn't have to because you said you believed us at our word. Of course he would be reluctant to repeat such negative posts but you kept asking. Then he supplied an example and asked if that example qualifies as profane. He happened to do all of that in one sentence that happened to end in a question mark, so your reply was the childish "are you answering a question with a question?" So he had to slow down for you to understand or maybe it was the sentence structure you wanted improved instead. Either way, his first reply was very clear to the rest of us but you wanted it reworded. All of this was unnecessary if we are to be able to believe what you typed. You simply showed us that we need not believe everything you type because of your contradictory posting about believing us.

IM actually more concerned that someone who claims to be a good English Professor does not know that the proper term is Professor of English...and that I have to actually correct said professor...ON THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE!

If he doesn't have a coconut radio, he's not The Professor anyway.

That being said, I do think there are things players--particularly forum participants--can do to improve and enlarge the SOM community.

1. Participate in and contribute to more forum threads. A lot of forum participants will only contribute to forum threads directly affecting them personally--such as individual league chats--or will only respond to forum threads or posts put up by their friends or posters they know. If many (if not most) of the posters keep doing this, new posters will have no opportunity to "join" the community, since nobody will participate in posts applicable to them or even respond to their posts.

2. Treat "newbies" and those you don't know--and their posts--with the same respect and/or consideration as you would one of your forum friends. Again, I've seen posters either treat people they didn't know with disrespect or discourtesy they wouldn't show their forum friends, or attack or team up against them simply because they were debating against those friends.

For example, the first time I read this forum, I saw a professed new player get in a disagreement with Micheal Grammes over Macintosh (of all things). Although neither Micheal nor the poster disrespected each other, some friends of Micheal's jumped all over the guy. One idiot, (whom I will not name) even threatened him and said "Fan Boys get slaughtered."...real "welcome to the community" stuff. That newbie never posted again and I assume stopped playing SOM.

So, in short, if members of the SOM community want to improve and enlarge that community, we need to get more communal and more welcoming.

Here's my original post again, Nev, and I truly suggest you and others give it and its suggestions serious consideration. I don't care about any credit for the ideas, and, even if you have a problem with me personally, you should judge these ideas on their own merit and value. As to the terms I used in my introduction, they were not "abusive." However, I agree with you that my continuing using them would not be conducive to actually improving the community, and we all need to avoid using them if we want to do so.

I'm going to take a break from ATG from a bit. Although I've enjoyed debating with most of you, even an old vet like me can get exhausted debating an entire tag team... ;)

And what you have just witnessed is how a "community" gets Ernie Banks added. This is what passes for a "community" here. As Nev said we had a niche tight group that enjoyed playing under the rules in play, a few loud complainy pants guys, who happened to spend the most money in Strat wanted more players, parks and it will never be enough. If all these changes were so great than why did the game go from being enjoyable to 5 guys typing on one thread?

The game has gone from being a strategy game to where the draft list was key, to a game playing niche parks. In the original design of the game, one of the problems of drafting a League 34 type league was that someone might get your guys and you would struggle at multiple positions, but with 4,000 players there is another All time Great to plug in from the vast resovoir of players, which is never enough for the Joe the Jet fans.

But there is definetly no going back now and this is the only niche product we have, just when are we going to get California Chrome added as a card? I know he is a horse but he would really have a great steal rating and I saw a whole lot of bunting at the Kentucky Derby.

Dear Sir- while I am not claiming that any of my posts are error-free; I am also not claiming to be a professor of any sort of language, never mind a 'good' one. I do have a copy of Strunk and White, if you would like, I can mail it to you, gratis, and perhaps on your break you can put it to use.
Also, I find the 'eye winking' as you found my 'eye rolling', cute.

Question...

Isn't an English Professor one that teaches English literature, and a Professor of English one who teaches how to write English (grammar, spelling, the use of similes, metaphors and the like)?

or am I just lost?
