I think its a solid statistic giving a shorthand summary of a player's production. However, the Monyeyball/Bill James view--with which I usually agree--is that it is misleading, since it gives OBP and SLG equal value when OBP is substantially more important than SLG. But if you keep that fact in mind, I still think OPS is useful.
