ATG 8: The key addition

PostWed Jun 04, 2014 9:33 pm

to my way of thinking is replacing all the non-superadvanced cards with their superadvanced counterparts that have been released since ATG debuted over a decade ago. This would affect a lot of cards, as STRAT has been very productive in releasing superadvanced seasons for the 50's, 60's and 70's since ATG first came out.

I'd be happy with that plus repricing, a few dozen cards from the past 10 years and of course the '65 Mays, Clemente's best year, the '75 Seaver card (not destroyed by excessive #'s), Kaline's best year and of course a Ross Barnes card, arguably the best player ever to play the game not named Babe Ruth or Josh Gibson.

It would also be nice if ballpark homeruns were somehow tweaked so that they don't dominate the higher priced leagues, but that I'm sure would stretch SOM's talents to the max and beyond. But the other stuff I ask for is all right there and, except for the repricing which gets farmed out to a ATG community member, should involve next to no resource allocation by SOM to right their currently sinking ATG ship.

I think it would also be important to add all of those slots for RPs on the computer game already to the online mix.
Not going to claim I know how involved that is except to say the code should already be written.

Ross Barnes addition? God I hope not, he was a specialist of bunting with backspin on the ball so it would bounce in front of the plate and roll to the backstop, gettting doubles and triples with his speed. After they changed the rule because of him his batting average went from .429 to .266.

Ross Barnes played in 499 games total he was only good for about 330 of them about 2 MBL seasons worth as his "seasons" from age 21-27 consisted of 30-60 games so fatigue was never an issue for a player whose game was based on running - his last three years under the rules in play for the rest of major league baseball when they banned the bunting fair and rolling foul from the age of 27-31 he sucked. It also helped him that most and the best able bodied men over the age of 25 when he started were pretty much shot up from the Civil war, so there wasn't exactly a deep player base to draw from.

He went from 35 extra base hits before the rule change to 1 the season after. His slugging average during the time of bunting fair and rolling foul with backspin bunting went from .600 dropping to .300 afterthe rules change. Some people claim he was sick, but the fact of it is he went from OPS of 1.1 average to around .600 and he played more games per year on average after the rule change than he had previously. In the veterans Hall of fame voting in 1936 he was 25th in voting with only 3.4% of the vote, and most of that was based on his defense in the field (he wasacknowledged as the best SS of his era ) and running ability, many felt that he should not be in the Hall of Fame at the time because his hitting success was primarily fair-foul bunting.

To get probably one of the best hitting cards with a BA and power for small ball from a guy whose game was based on rules not in play today would be a mistake. But if we do add him can I request we also add Wally Hammond?

I am not interested in any more players from the "WHITES ONLY" era! Today's Minor League players would dominate the "Whites Only" era. Back in the 1800s there were maybe a few thousand people in the whole world who even knew how to play baseball.

Actually, Radagast's post reminded me that the NeL players still need to have their injury ratings properly adjusted given that many played the equivalent of multiple seasons within one year with zero injury;
here the cards are penalized for having less than 600 ABs-
and since salaries are also likely going to be adjusted anyway, seems like the time to get it done.

I always found it unfortunate that every single NEL player somehow manages to choke in the clutch.

The clutch ratings are flawed at best. They are not even meant to reflect a batter's ability in the clutch. They were designed to be a RBI adjuster for stock team "as played" replays. The on-line game does not use ballpark "weather effects" or "starting pitcher clutch", they should really consider dropping the "clutch" OPTION.

I agree, I hate the clutch ratings about as much as you do Radagast!
