Mystery Tournament League Champion Crowned

PostTue Jun 10, 2014 2:56 pm

ths92110 (Tom) and his Cannibals pull out a dramatic 12 inning game 7 victory 3-2 scoring two runs in the top of the 12th and hanging on for victory allowing 1 run in the bottom of the 12th and wriggling out of a bases loaded jam when Paul Schaal flew out after an intentional walk to Jeff Burroughs. Tekulve held on for the save. Wasn't pretty, but he finished it off for the champion Cannibals.

SUBSTITUTION at P: Kent Tekulve (role: Closer)
0 G.Foster 4 Strike Out b-0 F9
1 D.Collins 5 Walk b-1 F9
1 1 I.Dejesus 2 Line Out b-0 F9
2 1 T.McCarver 4 Single 1-3 b-1 F9
SUBSTITUTION at PR: Julio Cruz
2 1 3 M.Hargrove 3 Single 3-H 1-3 b-1 F9
SUBSTITUTION at PR: Jerry Royster
Stolen Base 1-2 F9
2 23 J.Burroughs 0 Int Walk b-1 F9
2 123 P.Schaal 4 Fly Out b-0 F9

This was my second second place finish in the tournament. My first second place finish was in the inaugural tournament in 2008 when there were only the '70s and '80s to choose from. MoodyWoody finished first. AdamKatz and cplake were also in the playoffs. Strange thing about that team was it had the best record in the league at 89-73, but had a negative 6 run differential. The series was a sweep by MoodyWoody's nine.

This current loss was harder to digest. My team finished far and away ahead of everyone with a 99-63 record and positive 221 run differential playing in Fenway. Tom's Cannibals finished with the second best run differential at plus 79.

I look forward to playing again in the next Mystery Tournament. It was an extra tough challenge this year with so many teams in the hunt for the championship.

This was an ugly team that kept finding ugly ways to win, especially in the finals, when they took game 3 http://onlinegames.strat-o-matic.com/game/349233/985, and game 4 http://onlinegames.strat-o-matic.com/game/349233/986, with a bunch of 4's in the outfield because of injuries. In game 7 HAL decided to pull Lefty in the top of 12th because he had only given up 1 run in 11 innings of work. Enrique Romo promptly surrendered a go-ahead HR to Nettles (probably the series MVP in his worst year) and then a walk to Rick Burleson who scored on Merv Rettenmund's double. http://onlinegames.strat-o-matic.com/game/playbyplay/349233/989 It was just enough for Tekulve, who was a mistake I picked up at about the 80 game mark.

All in all ridiculously lucky set of events I'm very pleased with. Now how do I get my prizes????? :D

Congratulations to the champion and all the participants, particularly the managers who made it into the final 12.

I hope to participate in this tournament next time around! I get enough of the mystery games, though I have yet to try the 1960s. The 1970s and 1980s are by far my favorite.

Nice job guys!
