The experimentation continues....
Both seasons, last year, I fielded a team with no player rated in LF. My hope was that the computer game engine was coded with the manual game rules for playing outfielders at a position in the OF even if they weren't rated there. These manual game rules specifically allow CFs to play LF and RF with no penalty to range, error, or throwing arm ratings. RFs are allowed to play LF with no penalties. LFs are penalized for playing out of position in CF or RF.
Unfortunately, the computer game interface does not allow the explicit selection of an outfielder out of position in an OF position they are not rated at even if the game engine knows how to deal with it. I was able to work around this with some creative lineups where I left positions blank. The game engine correctly selected the best OF candidate to play out of position and properly placed them in the lineup. Eg. Kemp was put in LF and batted 5th vs lefties. Ethier was put in LF and batted 5th vs righties. The best part was that checking X-rolls to see how they performed in LF clearly indicated they were getting credit for their "3" range ratings and moderate error ratings. The experiment can be considered a success since I won 92 and 94 games, respectively. I got quality ABs out of both players batting 5th.
I could only hope the experimentation would never be necessary, again.
Alas...,
Domonic Brown sucks, Ethier sucks, Arcia sucks, any other LF I have also sucks. Jay Bruce and Nelson Cruz both only play RF. I have Ortiz at DH vs RHBs which means I can play Posey, Morneau, or someone I draft at 1B. If I continue my LF experiment, HAL should figure out to put Cruz in LF and I know how to maneuver him to bat 5th or 6th.
But, noooo. Zobrist ran through LF on the way to the bathroom twice ("Look, my prostate is killing me and I have to go PEE!") and they gave him a rating, there. Which means I need a LF unless...,
I might be able to leave both 2nd base and LF open in my lineup. If I have no other player rated at 2nd or LF except Zobrist (who's rated at both), HAL may decide to play Zobrist at 2nd and Cruz in LF. Of HAL might decide to play Zobrist in LF and who knows at 2nd as a 5eMAX.
I better draft a left fielder. I don't feel good about round 2 of the grand experiment.
