I watched almost his entire baseball career in San Diego, Though I didn't see any of his baseball games at San Diego State, I did watch him play point guard on the Aztecs' basketball team and still think he would have had a shot at an NBA career. Saw his entire career with the Padres and marveled at his hitting. Still remember his three-run homer in game 1 of the '96 World Series at Yankee Stadium, only to see that lead vanish when an AL ump blew a perfect strike 3 pitch from Mark Langston that would have ebded a Yankee rally (Tino Martinez hit a grand slam on the next pitch!). After he retired, I watched a number of Aztec baseball games when he coached there.
He was a true treasure for San Diego and I am deeply saddened at his loss.
