ATG 8: Japanese/Cuban Players

Unread postMon Jun 16, 2014 6:39 am
Hey guys,

We have carefully read your feedback regarding the addition of Japanese and Cuban ballplayers to ATG. Although we are disappointed in the reaction, we have decided not to add them to the new set. If enough users are interested we may be able to add those 30 players as an "ATG +" Player Set but when we launch we will do so without them.

We would never have considered adding these players to begin with if we felt they did not represent Baseball History. Although baseball in Cuba and Japan is different than baseball here, the game here has changed and evolved. Play in 1880 is not the same as it was in 1930 nor in 1968 nor in 1998. These Cuban players and Japanese seasons were carefully researched and evaluated to create Major League Equivalence factors to create cards that would integrate seamlessly into our current Major League rosters for those seasons. For example, although Sadaharu Oh hit 51 home runs in Japan during the 1973 season, his card reflects only 29. Players such as Sadaharu Oh and Omar Linares are among the best ballplayers in baseball history, regardless of where they played.

Having said that, again we have taken your feedback into consideration and will not launch ATG 8 with these players. We will consider an "ATG +" or ATG "Unleashed" if enough users would want to be able to play with them. If you are interested in that please speak up and let us know!

I'd be okay with an ATG unleashed. Especially if we could get a Marv Throneberry card thrown in.

I'm also glad that SOM has become increasingly responsive to our feedback. The next step would seem to be proactive solicitation of the community's interests by SOM - might help avoid the backlash evident since last Thursday.

Even better, for all concerned, would be for an active, ongoing dialogue between SOM and the community. This could easily be achieved, one would think, by simply unlocking Garcia's blog.

That would be marvelous.

Very glad that they listened and I would be fine with an unleashed version for those that wished to play it.

Nice to know that Oh's strat card would reflect some sort of MLB equivalence. But the question for me then would be, who needs another guy with 29 homeruns? The other question that then arises for me is, if Japanese homerun power is downgraded to 60% of MLB's (52 vs 29 hr's) then are they really anything more than a minor league anyway? And if so, do they merit inclusion in ATG? I'm sure there are many college greats at Arizona and USC who didn't make MLB but would have done well in Japan. Don't think they deserve ATG cards either.

I would be in favor of an unleashed set with Cuban and Japanese players.

Also the message was to the Strat community not to me individually. I'm glad they re acted so quickly to the concerns raised by the strat community.

All that whining for nuthin'.

Seems clear from the post that they fully considered how these guys stats would have been impacted by a MLB environment. I wish they would have added them. I think the reaction of the people opposed to this was embarrassing.

I am happy that they were placated because I'd prefer the community stay as large as possible.
I'd rather have more ATG owners than have some buck toothed, near-sighted mongoloids or their half-breed, peon, swamp island compatriots fouling up this beautiful game. Thank god this game has been kept pure.

I agree.

I would like to see the "mathematical" equation they used to figure out that 51 Japanese homeruns = 29 US Homeruns.

Is that the going exchange rate for homeruns these day. I wonder what doubles and triples convert to? And how about batting average?

Thanks for listening to us "Strat gods" I personally think a ATG8+ or unleashed is the way to go.
