Quite surprised that most of the new NEL season specific additions are worse than their supposed "aggregate" year cards.

That was my first thought when seeing the new Charleston card. If the current crop of NeL players is based on a 5 year average. Shouldn't their best season of that 5 year run be better than the 5 year average?

I tend to think though that the amount of data available for cross checking the overall stats in the negro leagues with stats when playing exhibitions against MLB players and the quality of the MLB players participating might be sufficient over a 5 year stretch but might not be there for just one season. So a single season based card could be less accurate and reflective of what really would have been than the 5 year span card. Could miss high or low though. So not a huge thing for me. But as I said logically the best season card of any players theoretically should be better than their 5 year aggregate/average card would be. And if we are getting a true single season card of any player should we not have the best single year of that player. Somehow I would have to say we either did not get the best Charleston season or the 5 year aggregate card does not accurately reflect what it reports to reflect.

I know some of what we all might be saying could sound negative but really these are just thoughts we are having. The thoughts are based on limited data made available by unofficial sources. Good chance the negativity would not be as high if the communicating was being done by official strat employees instead of community members giving unofficial leaks.

I must admit I would really love to see a spreadsheet sorting all the cards we voted in on George's polls by most desired. Then a simple check mark showing which ones we got. Did we get the most requested card? Second most desired? Third? You get the idea. How far down that spreadsheet would we go before we get to one that is not included. With 228 new cards I would hope we would definitely get at least the top 100 requested cards, if not the top 200.

Another way to look at it would be among the 228 truly new cards what percentage of those were in the top 228 requested cards. 90% and we most likely are happy or at least should be. 10% and probably really unhappy.

The price changes if accurate show a continued lack of understanding of how and why most of us play. :(

Fingers crossed that I'm wrong here as well.

The new Wells card reminds me of a classic Greek hero. Mighty in most respects but with a single tragic flaw.....
Good power, HRs and doubles. Good overall bat with OPS over 1.03. Some speed being an * stealer. Can even bunt (A).
Great range with the coveted 1. Fairly balanced as a 1L should not need platooning. And bulletproof at first glance.

Then the tragic flaw. Does all that positive karma outweigh that 40 error rating? :D

Would love to see more cards revealed for those who have the knack for finding them. And would love some of the old fashioned discussions on the merits or demerits of the cards like we used to have. I really enjoyed those. Some got comments the card was unusable and and I agreed and avoided. Others were denounced unusable and I saw potential and set out to prove the card could be a key part of a winning team.

Bottom line any opinions (even negative) have the potential to lead to interesting discussions. For example if I said Wells error rating was just too high for my blood how many of you would jump on me and burn me at the stake for sacrilige?

[quote]There does seem to be a lot of negativity here.[quote]
There may be some truth to that. But I think the negativity here is not like what we see so often involving complaints about the game company and .................

What I am seeing is more the negativity that follows the annual announcement of who will be starters in the allstar game, who will be reserves, and who got snubbed. It is an annual rite of passage to scoff and wonder how could all those idiot fans vote for Jeter just because it is his last year. Or if those dallas was really a baseball town instead of a football town they would have rallied and got Elvis voted in at short.

There is just the usual I would have done this different negativity and there is malicious negativity. For the most part in this thread I feel I am seeing the first kind. Just the same type reactions to first announcement of allstar rosters or HOF nominees.

So keep the previews and the comments coming. We need discussions on these leaked cards to get conversation started and build some excitement for ATG8. In this context in my opinion all talk is good talk, even critical talk. It is still talk that can lead to discussion which will lead to excitement.

How do the price changes show a lack of understanding of how and why we play?

Just how many $11 million cards not for players named Ruth or Bonds are left out there? Many of the requested cards were from George's list. But who do you think knows more about the collected SOM cards of the 17,000 people who have played MLB, George Barnard or Hal Richman?

Launch is scheduled for tomorrow - why don't you all look at more than 5 or 10 cards before posting your opinions? And please stop expecting them to find 50 new players that will impact $200 MM leagues - they probably just aren't there.

Well stated.

the above post is a myth. i can find 50 impact cards just with cards dated before 1910. from 1910 to 1970 another 50 mostly with players already in strat but for some reason without their best cards. after 1970 its limitless. obvious example sammy sosa. either his 2000 0r 2001 card would be nice. I AM so far underwhelmed. i think strat severely miscalculated the jap/cuban player card revolt. i'm sure they put a lot of time into those cards that have apparently now been shelved thereby leaving a shortage of new cards to be released with this set. with the release of the 8 promised, they were seemingly forced to release a short=handed set of cards. for this reason, i'd like them to make those shelved cards, they originally intended to include, available in an alternate ATG format for our use.

Here is a list of players that were requested or voted on with George Barnards polls. Does ALL his work go for naught? How many of these are we getting? Based on what has been posted so far. ONE!!!! Only ONE and his name is Ralph Garr.

Brady Anderson '96, Carlos Delgado '00, Shawn Green '99 or '01, Dustin Pedroia '08,
Evan Longoria '09, Ellis Burks '96, Gary Sheffield '92, '96 or '00, Jose Reyes '11, Ken Caminiti '96, John Olerud '93,
Vinny Castilla '98, Steve Finley '96, Bret Boone '01, Dante Bichette '95, Tino Martinez '97, Bobby Grich '81, Sixto Lezcano '97, Dave Parker '78, Willie Stargell '73, Dusty Baker '72, Larry Hisle '77, Ralph Garr '74, Magglio Ordonez '07,
Matt Holliday '07 and Garret Anderson '03.

I like the upgrade to the Super-advanced cards and removing the Fantasims. But what about WE as a community would like to see!

Based on Georges list,,,,requests were made to add a year to 8 existing players and create new cards for 17 or so additional players.

On the POSITIVE side the 74 Ralph Garr is an interesting DH choice for $60 and $80M leagues.

On the un-POSITIVE side WHIFFS on the other seven.....Once again they really are paying attention to the SHEEP....but we must wait for the set to be released some time later this MONTH (apologists are suggesting it might yet be today....ok LUCY) to find out if maybe 2 or 3 of the 17 suggestions for new players were maybe even added.

I tried to be POSITIVE :)
