Goodbye Robin Williams :(

I know this isn't SoM related, but just wanted to say that we lost a great person yesterday in Robin Williams.

Many of his films are American classics as much or more than baseball.

I was in the AF and missed Mork and Mindy the first time around, and when it went on in reruns, I couldn't figure out how the show didn't go on.

The movies he made made you think, laugh, and cry. Brilliant talent lost.

Stunning, sad news. If only we knew what was going on inside him. So many of us wish we had a chance to talk to him and perhaps touch his life in a small way, to maybe say the right words, that could have helped him. He touched all of our lives and if only there was a way for us to return the favor.

sad to see him go but he was 63 and did more cocaine and alcohol then anyone ive ever heard of. Why no sympathy for Garner and Bacall? much better talents without cocaine to fuel them. That said, Williams was hilarious but mostly because he was insane and loaded with drugs and alcohol.

they showed many clips of Robin doing a benefit with Goldberg and Crystal. If we weren'ttrying to be PC we would note that Whoopi and Billy backed off because there was no sense competing with a maniac, They were not in awe of his comedic genius.

Not all people are the same I guess. Some people try to reach out and help others through their struggles with addiction and such. It seems you take a different approach and think less of people that are not perfect and are screaming for help.

I hate to be a grouch but I never thought Williams was all that funny. Williams serious side was intriguing and by most accounts Williams was a good man who did a lot of charity work.... I do wonder if his two ex-wives ( at least one of which he cheated on with his kid's baby sitter) have a bit of a different view of Williams.... I also find it very disturbing that with all the wars going on and innocent, unarmed black kids being gunned down by police that Williams suicide would garner so much of the national and international news attention. I guess one celebrity taking his own life is a tragedy and thousands being slaughter by ISIS in Iraq is a statistic ... Just saying...

Definitely will miss Robin Williams. He had such a range, beyond the frenzy, which was noted by the multiple Oscar nominations and his win for Best Supporting Actor in "Good Will Hunting." I re-watched "The Fisher King" last night, and that movie comes alive with his presence - and he got nominated for Best Actor for that movie. So much more than Mork and mania, and his suicide is upsetting.

Comedy is such a personal thing. I tend to like the physical style, but my wife can't stand it. She prefers the talking stuff, more Jerry Seinfeld. We've been to comedy shows where the f-bomb was getting thrown like crazy, and we felt completely insulted, left, and got the refund. At other times, I've seen shows that worked with just about as much f-bombing. Comedy is so challenging, and so disrespected as an art form. It is just different from "serious" acting, not inferior to it.

Yes, we live in a celebrity obsessed society. How much is Lebron making? And who cares what team he plays on? What does that matter? How many people vote for a contestant on American Idol, but don't vote in their local school board election? Which one of those has a bigger impact on your life? We do have trouble sorting out what is important sometimes. As if I needed to say that to this crowd.

I agree that all of these things are tragic-
but I also think you are missing out on some things that if you have watched a film like Awakenings, or the Fisher King you 'might' feel differently.

IMO both of those films had an effect on the way our society views 1) people who at the time were completely written off as vegetables and 2) the homeless.

See, to me its not about the comedy as much as being able to get into very heavy topics like the above with a bit of humor.
