Garcia's Blog 8/14/14- More Questions/Barnstormers Tourn.

PostThu Aug 14, 2014 4:10 pm

Hey guys,

A couple of things for today. First, a few users have noticed two players in ATG 8 that have open ended splits starting with Single 1- and then nothing. These are actually straight singles, 1-20. On the cards, these results are a 'triple reading' where the first reading is ignored if you're playing the super advanced rules level, which Baseball Online uses. The second and third readings are generally a split between a single and an out. Our system automatically picks up this reading thinking there should be a split and adds the 1-. The two players are 1961 Mickey Mantle and 2004 Ryan Freel. We'll make the corrections to these card images and if you find any other player like this please let us know and we'll do the same for them.

Similar to last week we also received a number of questions from new users. The theme this week seemed to be "How to Read the play-by-play". In the play-by-play you may see an inning such as this one:

Code: Select all
0      T.Raines    2-4    Walk          b-1              F9
       Stolen Base                      1-2              F9
0 2    R.Ibanez    3-5    Fly Out (RF)  b-0              F9
1 2    D.Cruz      4-5    Fly Out (RF)  2-3 b-0          F9
2 3    C.Everett   5-10   Pop Out (C)   b-0    catch-x   F9
BOTTOM OF INNING 1

First, the numbers before the batter's name tell us the out and baserunner situation before the at-bat begins. The first number listed is always the number of outs before the at-bat starts. If there are any numbers after that, they represent if there are any runners on base and which base they're on. After the result (in Raines' case "Walk"), the next batch of information shows what happened to the batter and any baserunner's during the play. "b-0" means the batter is out, "b-1" he went to first, etc. For baserunner's the "b" is replaced by which base the runner was on.

So let's take a look at this inning. Raines leads off so the only number preceding his name is 0 as there are no outs and no baserunners. He walks so "b-1" means the batter reached first. He then steals a base and reached second displayed by "1-2". When Ibanez bats, there are still no outs but now a runner is on second so the preceding numbers display 0 2. Ibanez flies out and is retired ("b-0") but Raines holds his base so nothing is displayed for him. Cruz flies out and again it shows "b-0" but this time Raines tags and advances, displayed by "2-3". Everett pops out to end the inning.

Now let's take a look at a non-standard inning.

Code: Select all
BOTTOM OF INNING 2
0    J.Fregosi 5   Single              b-0       F9
1    D.Cater   5   Single              b-1       F9
1 1  J.Azcue   2   Home Run            1-H b-H   F9
1    R.Culp    6   Ground Out          b-0       F9
2    P.Rose    2   2 Base Error - CF   b-2       F9
2 2  N.Fox     4   Ground Out          b-0       F9

Here Fregosi and Cater both single followed by Azcue's homerun. However only 2 runs were scored this inning. Let's take a closer look. Fregosi singled but the display shows b-0 and then Cater batting with 1 out. This is due to Fregosi getting thrown out on the basepaths. Although a display like this would happen most often with baserunners going from 1st to 3rd, 1st to home, or 2nd to home, it can also happen when a batter tries to stretch a hit into an extra base. Here Fregosi tried to get a double but was thrown out at 2nd base. Although he is out, he is still credited with a single.

The same thing is displayed while watching a game replay. There, the results of the baserunners are shown below "Single" while the base and out situation are shown are the field.

Code: Select all
B2   J. Fregosi   Single
                    b-0

Moving on, since we last checked in on the Barnstormer's Tournament a month ago another Event has started as they're no on Event 5. springer0432 still holds on to a slim lead however bmilner has moved up to second, djmacb has gone from 5th to 3rd, with chuckwonup dropping from 2nd to 4th. The most important places though are those fighting for the last Semi-Final spots. Gamers ranked 10-45 advance to the Semi-Finals (1-9 automatically advance to the Champions League). A three-way tie currently exists for 44th place with a bunch of users right above or behind. Here's the closest users to those last few spots:

Only 10 points separated places 35 and 61! Certainly going to be a good race for those last spots going forward.

That's all I have for this week. As always, if anyone has any questions please let us know at onlinegamesupport@strat-o-matic.com. Talk to you all next week!
