Nice Problem to Have

PostWed Aug 27, 2014 6:23 pm

I am pretty new to Strat (2nd season).
Have a strong start (45-24), with balanced hitting and great starting pitching.
Heard that a bullpen is very important in the playoffs, which I anticipate making.
My question:
I think I need to acquire a 2nd reliever to balance Tekulve.
Should I consider moving Campaneris; or Torre to free up $$.
Campaneris for a cheap good fielding (2) SS is possible........
Or could drop Torre (don't have his best year) and play Holt (blistering vs. LHP but could be a fluke) vs. RHP, and Murphy (have his 5R card) vs. LHP- even though their cards read the otherway.
Any suggestions??

Without the knowledge of whether there are any interesting free agents:

1. Between your 4 starters you have S33*. Your relievers are not going to get alot of innings in. Playoffs or no, I would try to improve a hole in my lineup before my bullpen. Tekulve cant pitch to lefties, so you do want to improve that but, so far, Moore is doing ok. Murphy and cosgrove have more innings than anyone but are doing bad. If HAL is putting them in in blowout situations, drop them for other cheap RP and try for some that arent too tilted against righties. The point of a Seaver-Koosman is that you shouldnt spend alot on your bullpen.

2. torre not in his good year is a drop for me.

3. Not a great fan of Campeneris but he looks to be in one of his decent enough years. If Templeton, Metzger or Dent aren;t available, I probably wouldnt bother taking the 10% money hit and risk losing 100 points of obp.

I would probably try to improve my C (not alot of great options but Hundley is clearly not in one of his better years) and get a cheap corner OF (gaston, swoboda) and cheap 2B that could hit lefties before I worried about spending big bucks on a reliever. Not sure what is going on with Holt and Grieve but dont expect that to continue.

some of your players are significantly overperforming their best years (Murphy, Oliva, mcauliffe, not to mention whatever is going on with Holt and Grieve). Don't expect that to continue. Id fill n your offensive holes before spending much more on relievers.

I would NOT play Murphy or Oliva against lefties. I would not play Holt at all, unless you really needed the cash. At best, you should expect him to have a 750 OPS against lefties. The fact that he is currently hitting 1200 OPS against lefties has no bearing on that.

Thx Adam, very helpful...
B4 I move on Hundley, other than the Def. ratings (Range, Error, etc.) does HAL reward to how catchers "handle" a pitching staff.
Cerrone/Haller are available, which would give me LH/RH balance and Cerrone for Def in late innings, but Hate to disrupt my starters with new catchers

Haller can be good.

To my knowledge, how catchers "handle" a pitching staff is not a strat statistic or otherwise taken into account.

I'm considering dropping Torre/Hundley to pick up Wynegar/Gaston.
Torre is still hitting .294 vs. LHP, and Wynegar should be an offensive +, but giving up some defense vs. Hundley.
Still on the fence.....

Ha, 1st nite with Gaston/Wynegar I took 2/3...
But, those strat Gods may reward "handling" the pitching staff after all - 4 wild pitches w/out Hundley.
