Substitution is busted

Ok, explain this:

SUBSTITUTION at 1B: Kyle Blanks
SUBSTITUTION at P: Bobby Parnell (role: Closer)
SUBSTITUTION at RF: Brian Bogusevic
SUBSTITUTION at LF: Sean Rodriguez
SUBSTITUTION at C: Derek Norris
SUBSTITUTION at 1B: Brayan Pena
SUBSTITUTION at 2B: Sean Rodriguez
SUBSTITUTION at LF: Kyle Blanks

What should have happened was Blanks in for Gennett (going to 1b), Bogusevic in for Hamilton in right. Barney stays in the game. Done.


Also, I've noticed that "remove for defensive player" is removing guys whether there is anyone else who can play the position. I thought this was changed a couple of years ago. If not, it should be fixed. The way it works now is bad.

Subs have always been horrible. And no, as far as I know the "remove player" but there is no player was only fixed for Catchers and not for any other position.

In the examples above, I agree. And I have had HAL do some stupid sub like randomly replacing a player for no reason (rare). Or bringing in a defensive substitute when I am losing (more common).

However, in most cases he actually does a pretty good job. That doesn't make it any less frustrating, however, those times when he does do something bizarre.

My horror story was that each time Roy Howell would pinch hit for anybody but Ken Reitz, he always would come in to replace superior fielder, Ken Reitz, in the next inning for no reason. Dude, pinch hit for weak-hitting catcher,sit down, and eat some sunflower seeds. That's all I wanted you to do.

so true. obviously there is a mechanic where hal feels he must inset the ph in a defensive role. get over it hal, that's not how we want our teams run!

But wait...here's my horror story:

I have 2 catchers on my 60's roster, Ed Bailey & Jerry Zimmerman. In the game below, Zimmerman was unavailable due to injury, yet Bailey was still removed from the game in the 8th for a "defensive substitution" whereby Harvey Kuenn was moved from LF to catcher, even though HE CAN"T play catcher on his card!!!

PLEASE CORRECT THIS!!!! It's very frustrating and disappointing, as having played for a few years, but not for several months, I hadn't noticed/witness this bug until this season.

If you have Ed Bailey checked to be removed for a defensive substitute, then you can avoid this from happening in the future. Don't check that box for a catcher! Instead, list Zimmerman to come in at catcher under Team Strategy.

HAL will substitute for a player even if the substitute is worse if you check the "Rem. 4 def sub" box under Hitter Preferences. However, if you instead list Zimmerman to come in at catcher as a defensive substitute under Team Strategy, then nothing (bad) will happen if Zimmerman is not available.

I have come to really enjoy the no DH leagues I have been in, but for the substitutions. It doesn't make any sense to say it, but on one hand, HAL does better than I expected at double switch substitutions, but then other times HAL decides that my choice of Brendan Ryan as the defensive sub at SS is wrong and plugs in a slightly better hitting/much worse fielding sub like Herrera or Arias.
