I hate to be a pain about this but I am still not entirely comfortable about a couple of things.

I wonder if it would be fair to the Cleveland team to have Alomar taken away from them. Given that Lajoie is a 15 game injury risk, if it was my team I would rather have Alomar available as a backup than say Bill Sweeney. But, assuming the Cleveland manager is OK with giving Alomar to the Tor team, would only the version carded to the Tor franchise be eligible?

If the Cleveland manager is not OK with losing Alomar, I would not feel comfortable at this cap level with Utley at 2nd because of his obvious defensive shortcoming. As an alternative maybe a comparable to Alomar 2B such as Biggio or Knoblauch could be assigned to the Phillies team or, if that is not acceptable, perhaps letting the Philles choose 2 additional hitters and 2 additional pitchers would be the way to go.

Unfortunately I have to believe that the Baltimore franchise is going to be a serious stumbling block in getting this league off the ground. There is obviously a serious lack of quality pitching for a 175M league that would not likely be much better with only 2 additional arms added to the staff. To make them more competitive I think they would need 3 pitchers and at least 1 hitter.

A new try to THEME LEAGUE - World Series

PostWed Sep 03, 2014 8:36 pm

As I've said before, the fairest way of handling a nice idea like this one is to make it a 12-season commitment, with each manager getting to play each of the pairings once. And the first season should be random. We've seen what happens when prospective managers recoil because they don't like a particular franchise they'll be stuck with. Perfectly understandable.

But a good idea like Garrett's shouldn't be dismissed out-of-hand. Is anybody besides me willing to commit for 12 seasons rotating franchises under Garrett's original rules?

I'm not ready for a 12 league commitment to this concept.

everyone said CWS/CIN was the stumbling block so I took them. If everyone is so afraid of getting beat after shelling out $20 then I just need to move on.
A simple fix would have been to lower the salary cap. Anyway I will check this afternoon and if we aren't loaded then I will pull out and get in another theme or auto league. I do not want to miss another week and its already thursday

So is the thought that this league perhaps should be re-setup at a lower salary? $150M or perhaps down to $125M or so?

I was aware that there could be some positional or pitching spots that may have issues on a few of these, but that was why I put in allowances for taking a hitter and up to 2 pitchers from among the unused franchise choices as well as the NeL.

I am not so optimistic, but shall we see what happens by Sunday, and then let this fold if owner commitments not filled?

I would have no problem dropping to 150 mil if that makes everyone feel better, but I wonder if we've reached a new level of indifference overall. There are a few interesting themes posted out there and it seems they are filling at a tortoise-like pace if at all.

hackra wrote:This league is being themed by pairing up franchises that had memorably faced each other in one or more World Series. Hence the idea that in their World Series battles, "If you can't beat em, join em" whereby we do bring them together here; thus the league name.

Because some of these franchises may have a shortcoming (e.g., hard to find closer or relief), it is permitted that each owner may go outside of his franchise set for AT MOST 1 HITTER and AT MOST 2 PITCHERS. In doing so, he may not infringe on the franchise player set of another owner; rather he may utilize the 1 hitter and 2 pitchers from among these sets: NeL, Senators, Expos, Mets, Astros, Padres, Brewers, Twins, Mariners, Rockies, Diamondbacks.

So below are the franchises to be chosen, and the World Series upon which they're essentially based. Please reply with the one you will pick to let others know. (I pick the 1st one based on the very first World Series ...) When ready, you may pick your teams. PASSWORD = wsjoin

OK, I'll try as well. I'll take Cubs-Tigers. But I still think you'd attract more managers by randomizing the picks. Without that, I suspect the league won't fill.

1. BOS-db, BOS-pre, PIT-db, PIT-pre - In honor of the very 1st World Series in 1903 pitting Boston against Pittsburgh. (PICKED by GARRETT)
2. CHC (all), DET (all) - In honor of the Cubs - Tigers World Series matchups of 1907, 1908, 1935, 1945. (Picked by bontomn)
3. CHW (all), CIN-db, CIN-pre - In (dis)honor of the Black Sox Scandal series of 1919.
4. NYG-db, NYG-pre, PHA-db, PHA-pre - In honor of the old Giants - A's series of 1905, 1911, 1913.(picked by ycbill)
5. NYY-db, NYY-pre, STL-db, STL-pre - In honor of the Yanks - Cards series of 1926, 1928, 1942, 1943. (picked by hackra)
6. CLE (all), BSB-db, BSB-pre, ATl-exp - In honor of the Indians - Braves series of 1948, 1995.(selected by harryc)
7. NYY-post, NYY-exp, BKN-post, LA-exp - In honor of the Yanks - Dodgers series of the 1950s, 1977, 1978, 1981. (Picked by FrankM)
8. BOS-post, BOS-exp, STL-post, STL-exp - In honor of the Red Sox - Cards series of 1967, 2004, 2013. (PICKED BY MUSIAL6)
9. CIN-post, CIN-exp, PHA-post, OAK-exp - In honor of the Reds - A's series of 1972, 1990. (Picked by DrFreeze)
10. BAL-post, BAL-exp, PIT-post, PIT-exp - In honor of the Orioles - Pirates series of 1971, 1979.
11. PHI (all), KC-exp, TOR-exp - In honor of the Phillies series with Royals (1980) and Blue Jays (1993).
12. NYG-post, SF-exp, CAL-exp, TEX-exp - In honor of the Giants series with Angels (2002) and Rangers (2010).(picked by visick)

Indicate your teams, pick them, and let's see how fun this one will play out. Again, password is: wsjoin
