I have not yet been in a league but would like to put my name out there for an opening. I would like to think I'm a quick learner so by the time the cards come out in March I should at least be able to stand on my own two feet. Let me know if you have any openings

You may have to wait until March for openings to occur. Most leagues are winding down for this year's set and are hitting the off season. Invariably a couple of them will wind up with openings to take over existing teams whose managers don't return. Beside playing a few auto leagues between now and then I'd suggest looking o dr the rules for a couple of the keepers to see how they are set up and run. Most leagues post their rules as the very first post of their chat threads. I myself run 4 leagues that each have slight variations. Check out GMKL, NAKL, USKL3 and Unleashed Keeper League chat thread first posts for examples of rules.
I run a number of keepers, including a retro one that plays year-round (C'est La Vie League) and one that intentionally plays late in the card-set year (Summer - Winter Keeper League).
Watch this forum for news of any openings and jump quickly if one pops up. They usually fill right away.

if it is still around....??
I've read quite a bit on starter topics for newbies. The help topic for reading cards isn't the most indepth. If anyone has some advanced techniques to look for in card reading I would appreciate it
