As to Walker, Alk, you are definitely correct that Coors helped him, although not as much as it did Bichette and Castilla. He was, however, as statistically successful as Gary Sheffield away from Coors. Besides his success at and away from Denver, I have just always seen Walker as the ideal modern right fielder. He was a big, fast, mean (literal) hockey player of a right fielder. He hit for average, power, and speed, and was undoubtedly the fiery team leader, as he was in Montreal, and I always wished he played for my Giants.

As to Maddon managing the Dodgers, Steve, if that happens, the Rays might as well close up shop. They play in an awful stadium in a terrible part of St. Petersburg, with "fans" who don't care about him. All they had going for them was Friedman and Maddon, and Longoria won't be far behind if Maddon leaves.

Nice seeing the great Cat Stevens songs mentioned here, and those are two of my favorites.

EDIT: Strether, I just listened to your favorite C.S. song. His stuff is so soulful.

Looking at Walker stats I didn't realize he played 15 years .313 hitter 383 homers. His best years were at Coors also his prime of career. His overall number are very close to hall of fame worthy. Very close with Kaline. Walker played during the steroid era so for there is always a shadow of doubt, but I would vote for him to go into HOF he was 5 tool player

Gwynn should be higher. Best hitter since Ted Wiliams, 'cept maybe for George Brett.

"Backstreets" not even the 4th best song on Springsteen's best album. And you could toss in "Racing in the Streets" for good measure, later in the decade.

Thanks for your input Tom. Gwynn is definitely one of the best hitters since Williams, but he wasn't the all-around player/right fielder the others were. I could see ranking him higher than Walker, but not Dawson, Suzuki, or Jackson; they were just more impactful in their all-around games than the pop-less Gwynn.

And "Backstreets" is the best song on Born to Run. "Thunder Road," "Born to Run," and "Jungleland" are all excellent songs--are those your favorites?--but they are all a shade melodramatic in their lyrics, composition, and production. " Backstreets'"lyrics are subtly melancholic, and the composition elegantly progresses from Roy Bittan's lyrical piano opening onto Bittan's crescendo perfectly accompanying Springsteen's wistful wail.
