Theme Leagues I'm Not Wishing For

PostSun Oct 12, 2014 12:45 pm

Theme leagues are fun, but, let's not go overboard. Here are theme leagues that likely won't garner much interest:

1. A "gender-confusing" theme league where everyone's first name must be Babe, Dolly, or Lady (or any other female-sounding name)
2. A "tragic" theme league in which half of the players must have died young, gone to prison, or had a substance abuse problem after their playing days were over.
3. A "clean-living" theme league in which all players must have been married one time.
4. A "zodiac" theme league in which all players must be Sagittarius.

That's not true. I was just recently in Genegrid's (I believe) Franchise League 3, which filled pretty quickly. I really enjoyed it and made the finals. I was also recently in Jeep's Dunk Jeep league, which also filled quickly. I had too many teams to join the second run, but that filled up quickly as well. So the theme leagues are doing just fine.

The only recent theme league I saw have difficulty filling was Visick's recent league (which did fill). However, Visick specified that previous owners would have first shot. So, non-previous owners were indirectly discouraged from signing up since they could just be booted after they did so.

Also, newbies and newcomers sometimes don't want to join leagues where everybody else clearly knows each other well. Those players often just talk among themselves in the league and aren't always as friendly to the newcomers. That's usually not the case, but it happens. So, theme leagues that are more clearly open to everybody, and don't just beckon to a select group, have the best chance of attracting all possible participants.

What?

where was Generid's post? not in the 200x forum in the last 2 months....

Jeep's only need a few people, was not a sign up from scratch. Visick was a pre-card, double league, that still took a week to fill when it had 9 or so returning people.

Show me the last theme league that filled up from 1-12 fresh in months that was posted in the 200x forum.

Nobody, including you in your original post, said "in the last two months." I said "recently," and you and I did recently play in this theme league of Genegrid's, which filled up fine.:
genegrid wrote:1. Sign up and we will randomize for draft position to pick a franchise
2. All players from your franchise are yours regardless if you draft them or not. They are your minor leagues,
3. $80 million cap and DH, Auto Draft waivers 5/10/20
5. 0 to 5 Free Agents allowed on each team that are not carded to one of the 12 teams drafted. This will help weaker franchises.
5. Trading of free agents is fine but no trading of franchise players to stay within theme.
6. Use your home ballpark
7. PLEASE make your team name easily identifiable to your franchise (Example: Do not draft New York Mets and call them Gotham City Goombahs). Use their nickname at least so no one has to check your roster to see who they are playing.

Not only did this league fill up fine, everyone enjoyed it. I know I did; I hope you did as well.

Geekor, you need to read my posts better before responding. I made it clear that I was talking about both of Jeep's Dunk Jeep Leagues, and that the first one filled up fine as well:

I also posted this about Visick's league, which you also apparently missed and failed to address:

So, as you see, there was an inherent prohibitive element in Visick's league deterring non-returning players from joining. So, of course it was going to take longer to fill. It still filled in a week, which is a short time. As to any problems with leagues filling, Alk and I accurately noted a problem with some, not all, theme leagues. You never addressed what we said:

In short, if veteran players in keeper leagues act as friendly to newcomers to the leagues as they do to the veteran and/or return players, more players will play in future theme leagues and more players will hear of good experiences in them.

I showed two of them right above, two I already mentioned in my first post if you had read it closer. So, all your concerns about the theme leagues are unfounded and a bit alarmist. Theme leagues are still filling in decent time. We just need more people to make and offer theme leagues for everyone and less people making them like clubs for the old gang; that's what private leagues are for.
