HAL is usually looking for the best offensive option. If you have your catcher as Remove for Defensive Replacement with a Lead, or even had your catcher pinch-hit for earlier in the game with no viable replacement (due to injury, etc), then it makes a little more sense. HAL will remove a player you have marked as Remove for Defensive Replacement, even if you don't have a viable replacement available.

Foxx actually started his career as a catcher. Maybe HAL knows this somehow.

well, my starting catcher got hurt. And then my backup catcher got hurt. So Hal moved Beckwith from 3rd base to catcher.
I have Beckwith set for remove for defense.

If Hal is set in his ways and must remove Beckwith, one would think he could put Coleman at C instead of ruining another positions defense.

Well, that explains why Beckwith came out. I don't know what the priority of defensive replacements is, but apparently filling the C slot was the first priority.

I would suggest listing Beckwith's defensive replacement on the Strategy Page but NOT have Beckwith marked as Remove with a Lead on the Hitters Pref Page. If Beckwith wasn't checked to remove on the Hitter Pref Page, this would not have happened.

In fact, I don't view Beckwith's 4e18 as defense that necessarily needs to be removed, but that's just my preference.

In other words, when HAL sees your command to Remove Beckwith for a Defensive Sub, he doesn't look down your bench and say, "Oops, there's no good replacement at 3b for Beckwith available today," and leave him in. HAL removes him by your order, then does the best he can to create a defense out of what's left.

But....if you have Player A listed as a defensive replacement at 3b on the Strategy Page, then HAL looks down your bench and says, "Crap, Player A is injured. Beckwith will have to suck it up today," instead of grabbing Vince Coleman to play 3b, for example.


I would figure he took Foxx because he was an infielder, then filled in with Coleman and Gaspar
