this has the potential to be a Jason Bay part DEUX signing, with the exception that it's only 2 years.

Jason Bay signed for four years @ $16,500,000/ year. The fact that the Cuddye'sr contract IS only two years makes it impossible for it to be similar to Bay's situation. Bay's contract was for double the time period and not to mention 150%+ dollars/year more and to top it off, there was $44,000,000 more in overall contract value to be paid. To say it's potentially similar to Bay's situation is ridiculous and just not true. You are comparing apples and oranges.

Agreed - nice post. This contract will still be move-able near the end of Year 2 to a contender based on Cuddyer's history. The same cannot be said for Bay and his contract.

While I feel that the Mets could have offered ~ $5M less over the course of the 2-year pact, it is not comparable to the Bay signing.

I'm sure the Mets could have offered $5 less, but I don't see Cuddyer jumping at a 2yr $16M contract...that's barely more than Micheal Morse got this year. In fact, such an offer would probably have encouraged him to further test the market and sign with somebody else or return with a competing offer to jack up the Mets'. The Giants need a left fielder and have always liked Cuddyer. I'm sure they would have jumped in the mix.

As I said earlier, 2 years, $21M for a hitter of Cuddyer's capability and a player of his versatility is a solid deal. They were smart to not try to stringently negotiate with a player they could truly use, if not outright need.

I guess I should have been more clear...

...all I meant was,

it has the potential to be yet another power hitting OF signed by the Mets that doesn't perform up to expectations or live up to the contract. Meaning if Cuddy doesn't come in right away, and RAKE like he in in Colorado, people are going to look at it as another bad signing regardless of the money.

Fixing my Padres.

Maybe I shouldn't state it as "Fixing" so much as ideas to hopefully improve. That said I could see a trade of either Cashner/Ross/or Kennedy. for what in return I'm not exactly sure. I'll offer some names that intrigue me.

Guys I would like to get are...

Heyward (rumored to be available for pitching), Padres have some pitching depth to get a deal done. I admit that this acquisition is the least likely to happen. RF Hunter Renfroe will probably be ready in 2016 after all. Or maybe even Rymer Liriano.

Alen Hanson (I would put him at 2B for the Padres and move Gyorko to 3B) is a perfect Petco sort of player. Fast and hits for doubles and triples. Pitt did just sign Burnett but they could still use an Ian Kennedy. I would also get Pedro Alvarez or Ike Davis in such a deal. If the Padres don't re-sign Alonso (he's a huge injury risk anyways) then they'll need another 1B.

Padres need a shortstop. Amarista was very good defensively for them in 2014 but he's never been a regular every day player and he can't hit very well. I would be fine with the Marrero kid in Boston. Maybe Benoit and a minor league SP not named Wisler for Marrero (Eflin maybe)? Cabrera is likely out of the picture after his cumulative legal issues.

I would like to see something like this...

C: Rivera/Grandal
1B: Grandal/Alonso/Alex Dickerson/Someone else (1B will probably be a fill by committee position for the Padres but Dickerson is my favorite)
2B: Hanson, Alen
3B: Gyorko
SS: Marrero, Deven
LF: Seth Smith/Quentin platoon
CF: Maybin or Reymond Fuentes (I would prefer to see what Fuentes can do). Maybin has worn out his welcome for me.
RF: Spangenberg (Spangy reminds me of Eric Owens...can play any where - not particularly well - and he's fast with a good stick)

Interesting speculations, Fred,

I definitely think both Heyward and Hanson would be great additions for the Padres. If Tyson or Cashner are included, I wouldn't be surprised if either could be had, and I don't think Alvarez or Davis would cost much.

As to shortstops, I would look in Texas' direction. They' would definitely be willing to move either Profar or Andrus for a package starting with Ross or Cashner, although I'm sure they'll ask for Wisler or Fried in a Profar deal. Another curious player to target if they want to aim big would be Joey Gallo. I doubt Texas would be willing to give him up for anything but a knockout deal, but he could play 3rd and first, and his amazing power would even play in Petco.

You've got a good eye spotting Marrero, who looks like a right-handed Crawford with less pop, but I don't see Boston giving him up without getting Ross, Cashner, Wisler, Fried, or Renfroe...particularly since Boston isn't sure yet that Bogaerts is a shortstop.

Anyway, you clearly know your team, and I'm sure Preller would appreciate your input... :D

Okay. I'll give Boston Cashner for Marrero.

EDIT: I'd also deal Cashner for Starlin Castro or Addison Russell.

I'm not sure about Profar's shoulder(s) at this point in time. And while I think Andrus would be perfect for Petco his contract might be the roadblock. I would love to acquire Andrus.

Unfortunately, I don't see the Padres actually doing that deal. i believe they think Cashner is a difference maker on the mound (possible CY Young candidate) and that in-house shortstop Trea Turner (2014 draft) is the future at the position. I guess it depends on how long you want to wait. I see Cashner as an injury-prone but very talented - and able - starting pitcher. The Padres do have a few of those types however.
