70s Theme League: Al Dark Memorial

PostWed Nov 26, 2014 12:32 pm

Al Dark, former player and manager, died earlier this month (November 13th). His death gave me an idea about a possible theme league, which was to have teams consisting of players that he managed. But before I went to too much effort, I wanted to get a feel as to whether there would be interest.

Dark had the following managerial stints: S.F. Giants 1961-1964, Kansas City A's 1966-1967, Cleveland Indians 1968-1971, Oakland As 1974-1975, and San Diego Padres 1977.

Even though he managed the Giants early in the 60s, there are actually a substantial number of those players in the 70s set (i.e. Mays, McCovey, Cepeda, Marichal and Gaylord Perry).

I wanted to do small ball ($60 M), possibly restrict the stadiums to the teams that he managed, and require that all teams have a certain number of his players (most likely at least one representative of each of the teams) on them at all times and that they represent a substantial portion of the teams overall salary (i.e., you just can't load up your team with cheapo $0.75 players).

And all team names would have to have Dark in the Title.

Anyway, I'm open for suggestions and comments.

If there appears to be sufficient interest, I will work on a spreadsheet.
