Can't it also be argued that had Gil played those 2 years, maybe he would have been a better hitter?
That is possible he would have been a little better his first full year of playing if it had been his second or third. But bet after that he would have been what he was. Maybe he gets up to 400 HRs. Milestones being what they are crossing one often gets you consideration that falling just short does not.
I think that was one of the factors in Jose Canseco not being able to get a job at the end. Everyone kind of knew he had cheated and did not want to be team that game him the chance to hang around and reach the 500 milestone and ignite a HOF debate. While not suspected of PEDs I think similar thinking was happening with Kingman who could not get a job in spite of hitting 35 his last season in Oakland. He almost certainly could have hit 30+ a few more years if given a chance in Texas or Colorado. And I heard both wanted to play more seasons but nobody would even give them the minimum. I also heard Barry Bonds wanted to play a couple more years and be only guy to reach 800 but no takers even if he was willing to accept the minimum.
Whoa. Getting off target here. Will shut up now.
