Wow. That was really good. Although I don't care a whit about Cooperstown's tourist dollars, I do think having a balance between impossibly high and 'everyone and his mother' -sound's right.

My main agenda is getting the 'best player' by position per league per decade idea up and rolling.

I think it's a very fair addition to the current selection criteria. It also covers the "you had 5 REALLY amazing years' criteria, which allowed Koufax and Dean to get in.

Can't it also be argued that had Gil played those 2 years, maybe he would have been a better hitter?

That is possible he would have been a little better his first full year of playing if it had been his second or third. But bet after that he would have been what he was. Maybe he gets up to 400 HRs. Milestones being what they are crossing one often gets you consideration that falling just short does not.

I think that was one of the factors in Jose Canseco not being able to get a job at the end. Everyone kind of knew he had cheated and did not want to be team that game him the chance to hang around and reach the 500 milestone and ignite a HOF debate. While not suspected of PEDs I think similar thinking was happening with Kingman who could not get a job in spite of hitting 35 his last season in Oakland. He almost certainly could have hit 30+ a few more years if given a chance in Texas or Colorado. And I heard both wanted to play more seasons but nobody would even give them the minimum. I also heard Barry Bonds wanted to play a couple more years and be only guy to reach 800 but no takers even if he was willing to accept the minimum.

Whoa. Getting off target here. Will shut up now.

If we take Outta Leftfield's comments about building tourism...

How many old Brooklyn Dodger fans would Cooperstown see if Gil made the Hall?

The Hall is definitely interested in promoting tourism, but at the same time, from all I can tell, the powers that be at the HOF don't actively politic with the voters on the various "old-timer" Committees for any given player based on that player's potential as a drawing card.

The Hall just tries to set up a voting system that will continue to bring in a reasonably steady stream of new and solid HOF inductees beyond the players elected by the BBWAA. If Tiant--for example-- got in, he'd bring in Red Sox fans, so that would be fine, too. One Cubbie fan friend of mine specifically attended the Hall to see Santo inducted, so these things do happen.

The HOF went to this three-tiered period system because they were having trouble electing anybody for a decade or so via a problematic Veteran's process they set up in the late 1990s (IRRC).

I'm pretty good with the new process, as defined in this thread: http://forum.onlinegames.strat-o-matic.com/community/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=637043&sid=ce47157c45c29ee6bdcdb249a465d37d

Hodges gets his fair shot in competition with contemporaries such as Tiant, Dick Allen, Kaat, Ken Boyer, etc. If he gets in in the context of straightforward competition with his peers, that's fine with me. But if he doesn't make it, I don't see it as an injustice. It's simply that the voters on the 16 person Committee didn't think he was as well qualified—and he'll get another chance in three years.

The Committee members get 5 votes (of which they can use 0 to 5), and a candidate needs 75% to make it, just like with the BWWAA, so it's possible for more than one candidate to be elected. If anyone else wants to indicate the 0 to 5 players they'd vote for, I'd be interested.

If it were me, I'd use 4 votes and go for Tiant, Allen, Boyer and Kaat, but that's just me.

Thanks, Scumby. Here's another interesting one--

Hodges: vs a different Mystery Player (not in HOF)

.
    273 ba .272 ba
    .359 ob .370 ob
    .487 slg .470 slg
    120 OPS+ 127 OPS+
    1921 hits 2446 hits
    370 hr's 385 hrs
    1274 rbi's 1384 rbis
    1105 runs 1470 runs
    63 sb' 78 sb

I will add that the Mystery Player was an outstanding fielder (8 GG) at a more important defensive position than 1b. (BTW, I can't seem to get any spaces between the columns of numbers. Suggestions?)

You're on the right track. And he's a more recent player than Hodges.
