Merkle's Boner refers to the notorious baserunning mistake committed by rookie Fred "Bonehead" Merkle of the New York Giants in a game against the Chicago Cubs in 1908. Merkle's failure to advance to second base on what should have been a game-winning hit led instead to a forceout at second and a tied game. The Cubs later won the makeup game, which proved decisive as they beat the Giants by one game to win the National League pennant in 1908. It has been described as "the most controversial game in baseball history."[1]

Another odd footnote: In looking at the players that were added to ATG8 in October, I noticed that Hughie Jennings was HBP 51 times in 1896!

As it turns out, he was hit 202 times in the 5 seasons of 1894-1898 and holds the career HBP record of 287.

I love Football but Baseball and its history will always be 1st in my heart. The stats and records were once very important to me not so much since 1998. I am always still amazed after 47 years of watching baseball I still see something I haven't seen happen before. In SOM also!
