The other kind of cards we care about

Sy Berger, credited with pioneering the favorite boyhood hobby of baseball cards, passed away yesterday at age 91.

I read this article yesterday; and of course also collected Topps baseball cards when I was younger;
still have a number of em, but most are unfortunately not in the condition that would make em seriously valuable.

I had a Mantle 1952 Topps card.
Took a clothespin and attached it to the fork of my bicycle to make the motorcycle sound.

My sister still has the card. One side had half the ink worn off by the spokes. It's not worth saving from a cash standpoint, but yet every 2 or 3 years I make it back to Jersey, and out comes **that** card.

You were on the way to cornering the market

Your 23 cards had me beat; in my the first year of card-collecting - 1965 - I had 19 Pete Charton cards; I think he pitched about 60 some innings for the Red Sox that year and never pitched in the majors again! I always thought he was either projected to be a budding superstar or he was related to somebody at Topps. As a eight year old at the time I collected them I was embarrassed to admit I had no idea who he was and so I hid them from my friends (who probably had scores of their own).

You guys might find this interesting as well. I liked his comment how the baseball cards today seem too professional and even airbrushed. Part of the allure for me as a kid was the goofy staged poses they would have the players do. As an awkward kid I could see a lot of myself in those grown up little boys playing ball and dream that someday I could have my own baseball card. Funny thing is, I can actually make my own baseball card for real on my home computer - not the same.
